AMD has pushed firmware binaries for a new graphics IP called RDNA 4m, also known as GFX1170, into the Linux firmware repository. That sounds dull, but it is a reliable tell: those files normally show up on launch day or a few days before it. The first chips carrying this IP are close.
What RDNA 4m is, and why the name is odd

The m is not about mobile, it is about sitting in between. By code number the IP lands exactly between RDNA 3.5 (GFX1150) and full RDNA 4 (GFX1200). So it is neither the fourth generation nor quite the third and a half: some blocks come from above, some stay below.
- INT8 support. Eight bit integers, the format machine learning models run on.
- Native FSR 4. AMD upscaling runs on the IP itself rather than being worked around.
- First chips: Medusa Point. Future mobile APUs, which means integrated graphics, not discrete cards.
Who this matters to
There is a detail here that makes the story more interesting than another line in a repository. AMD intends to keep RDNA 3.5 in integrated graphics until 2029. In plain terms, anyone buying a laptop over the next few years risks getting the same iGPU that sits in Ryzen AI 300 and 400 today. Against that, RDNA 4m reads as a way to lift integrated graphics without moving the whole lineup to a new generation.
The second point concerns Redstone. AMD machine learning features lean on RDNA 4 blocks specifically. An RDNA 3.5 iGPU cannot use them, and RDNA 4m is the piece that would close that gap.
An honest caveat. AMD has already opened FSR 4 up to older Radeon generations, so exactly what RDNA 4m will justify itself with is not entirely clear yet. There is no formal announcement and no dates, and everything above is reading the tea leaves.
