Every free game Epic Games Store has given away

Epic Games Store has been handing out a free game nearly every Thursday since December 2018. That adds up to 709 giveaways and 631 different titles on PC, and at some point everybody loses track of what they already claimed.

What is free right now

Those four come straight from Epic's own promotions feed, which is also where the next week's pair shows up a few days early. If this section looks out of date, the date under the page title will tell you when we last touched it.

How the giveaway works, and how not to miss one

The schedule is boringly reliable, which is the useful part. New games appear every Thursday at 15:00 UTC, and the old ones vanish at the same moment. You get exactly seven days.

Claiming takes about fifteen seconds and you do not need the launcher. Open the store page in a browser, sign in, press Get. The game lands in your library and stays there permanently, whether or not you ever install it. That is the whole point: you are not renting it for the week, you are keeping it.

Two things trip people up. Epic periodically requires two factor authentication before it will let you claim, so turn that on now rather than at 14:58 on the Thursday you actually care about. And 78 of these titles have been given away twice, which means a game you are about to grab may already be sitting in your library from 2019. The store page says so if it is.

How much Epic has actually given away

2020 was the peak at 103 games, which is roughly two a week for a whole year. What surprises me more is how steady it has been since: somewhere between 88 and 100 a year, every single year, with no sign of the programme winding down.

December is the month worth putting in your calendar. Instead of one game a week, Epic switches to roughly one a day, and the December totals show it: 16 in 2019, 18 in 2020, 21 in 2021, 22 in 2022, and 15 to 17 every year since. If you only check this page twice a year, make one of those visits mid December.

The best games Epic has ever given away

Grand Theft Auto V, on 14 May 2020, is the one everyone remembers, and not only because it scores 97. The rush knocked the store over. Loading times collapsed, the site threw 500 errors, the launcher crashed, and the mess spilled onto Fortnite's servers. Epic said things were mostly restored the following morning.

The rest of the top ten is a decent argument for checking in every week even when the headline game looks small. Inside, Celeste, Limbo, Into the Breach and World of Goo are not blockbusters and every one of them is better than most things you paid for this year. Super Meat Boy, at 90, was the second game Epic ever gave away, two weeks after Subnautica opened the whole thing on 14 December 2018.

The complete archive, year by year

Every PC giveaway since the store opened, newest first, with the Metacritic score where one exists. Open the year you want. The date is the day the giveaway started, so a game listed on a Thursday was free until the Thursday after.

Some entries have no Metacritic score because the game was never reviewed there, which happens a lot with the smaller indie titles and with everything on mobile. It is not a judgement on the game.
