Steam now shows developers how many fps you really get in their game, starting with Deck

Developers on Steam can now see what frame rate people actually get in their games on Steam Deck. On 1 October Valve added a framerate distribution chart to the partner dashboard: what share of time a game runs at 60 fps, at 40, and how much it dips below 30. The data comes from Deck owners who agreed to share it, and Valve says that is most of them.

Valve explains up front how to read the chart. Steam Deck LCD tops out at 60 fps and the OLED at 90. Many players cap their frame rate to save battery, so even a game that holds 90 easily will show some time at lower values. Some play docked on a higher-refresh monitor. And loading screens, where frame rates drop hard, are counted too.

Valve gives an example of why this matters: if a large share of time lands below 30 fps and players report performance problems, that is a signal to look at optimisation or change the game's default graphics settings on Deck.

Why only Deck, and what players get out of it

Every Steam Deck has the same hardware, Valve explains, so the data is easy to interpret and a good place to start. The company does not say whether these charts will come to other devices; it only asks developers for feedback. TechPowerUp suspects the Steam Machine and other SteamOS systems could be next, but that is the outlet's guess for now.

For players the benefit is indirect but real. Before, a developer saw an average and some reviews; now they can see how much of the time their game struggles on Deck. The clearer the picture, the better the odds of sensible Deck defaults and faster optimisation patches. It is the second Steam change for developers in a week, after Valve said it will drop hand-picked deal slots from the home page.
