The GTA VI leaks: what holds up and what was simply drawn

In a week and a half more of GTA VI has been shown than Rockstar managed in three years: chases, interiors, cutscenes, flying over the city. And apparently from the PC version, which the studio has not even announced. Meanwhile the most discussed piece of all of it is the one that does not exist.

The group calling itself CyberLeek posted a run of clips between 18 and 20 August. Basketball in the yard at Jason place, driving and shooting, the inside of a strip club, a cutscene with a beer on a boat, a flight over the city. The capture quality is rough, but there is very little doubt that it is real, and here is why.

  • They are playing it, not replaying a recording. In one clip someone spells out LEEK with bullets on a wall. That is controller input, not editing.
  • The build is recent. The car radio plays Sports Car by Tate McRae, a single released at the end of January 2025. So the capture came later than that.
  • Rockstar confirmed it by accident. People reuploading the clips got copyright complaints. Nobody defends someone else fake that hard.
  • The group has demands. They want a clear position from Rockstar on the all digital future and against what they call fake single player content locked to the Ultimate Edition.

The Russian credits: stop right here

On 22 August a screenshot of the GTA VI final credits in Russian went around. The conclusion was instant: the leaker is from Eastern Europe, that is why nobody has caught him. It is a good theory and I would have bought it. The screenshot is drawn.

People who bothered to check found two things. The text is simply laid over a leaked frame. And the producer in those credits is Leslie Benzies, who left Rockstar back in 2016, then went to court with Take-Two and has long been making his own games at Build A Rocket Boy. He has no business being in the GTA VI credits.

We still know nothing about where the leaker is. The only rational part of that theory goes like this: someone who has spent three weeks posting material from the most expensive game ever made and is still not in custody is probably somewhere American law enforcement cannot reach. That is reasoning, not evidence, and it does not need a forged screenshot holding it up.

He is playing a version that officially does not exist

This is the most interesting part of the whole story to me, and almost nobody is talking about it. Judging by the clips, the build CyberLeek has is not a console one but a PC build. That is the reading from DSOGaming, an outlet that specialises in PC versions and has been watching leaks like this since 2022.

Now put that next to the official page. It lists exactly two platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. About PC, Rockstar has said nothing at all. No date, no year, not even the word later. The studio traditionally ships the PC version about a year after consoles, but that is a pattern from past games, not a promise.

  • The PC build already compiles and runs. Somebody is recording clips off it, so inside the studio that version exists and works.
  • Officially it does not exist. A PC buyer today has nothing to plan around except guesses.
  • Hence the anger. An outsider is showing what the company will not show its own future customers.

Rockstar has a reason: announcing a second platform before the first one ships splits the sales. From the outside, though, it looks exactly the way it looks, and it heats the whole story more than any of the clips do.

Why the leaker gets sympathy instead of blame

Normally a comment section does not cheer for a thief. Here it does, and the reason is not romance. It is what happened to the GTA VI editions back in June.

  • There is no disc in the box. When pre-orders opened on 25 June it turned out the physical edition is a box with a download code, and nothing else.
  • The promises about a disc are vague. Rockstar support told buyers a physical copy could be acquired during the following months. The Hollywood Reporter later reported that the studio has no plans for discs and that those emails were a misunderstanding.
  • The Ultimate Edition is digital only. The most expensive edition, the one with story content in it, does not physically exist at all.

And it is against that backdrop that a group turns up demanding, in plain words, a position from Rockstar on the all digital future and speaking out against story content locked inside an expensive edition. The people who were furious about an empty box in June found someone in August using their vocabulary.

The two stories amplified each other. The leak gave the protest a loud occasion, and the protest gave the leak a moral cover that an ordinary theft never gets. I do not think that makes stealing a build fine. But I understand why the comments under those clips hold more sympathy than outrage, and Rockstar built that part of the story itself.

And all of it two days before Rockstar own showcase

The funniest part: the official game page already carries an announcement for an extended look on 27 August, and GTA VI itself arrives on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. In two days Rockstar will show the game itself, in proper quality and without the pixels.

What I will remember from this week is not the clips. The real story is how quickly a second industry grew around the leak: people who leaked nothing but draw screenshots, invent ultimatums and collect the views. One outlet redacted an article completely, another walked back its Netflix claim, and the forged credits went round half the internet before anyone opened them and read the names.

And the practical bit worth keeping in mind. While a wave like this is running, somebody will offer you a build to download. We took one of those apart, 113 GB of it: a 50 KB virus inside and a hundred odd gigabytes of zeroes for weight. The full timeline of the leaks in order is here.

Sources

The 19 November 2026 release date, the platforms and the 27 August extended look come from the official game page on rockstargames.com. The list of clips, the LEEK wall, the Tate McRae track, the copyright complaints and the group demands are reported by Push Square on 20 August 2026. The redaction of the dead man switch story and the BBC walking back the Netflix special come from Insider Gaming and GTA BOOM on 22 and 23 August. The analysis of the forged Russian credits comes from ixbt.games on 22 August. The conclusion that the build is a PC one follows the assessment by DSOGaming on 23 August 2026; Rockstar has not commented on the platform of the leak. The missing disc in the box, the support reply about a physical copy during the following months and The Hollywood Reporter saying there are no plans for discs come from the Vice piece of 25 June 2026 and its update. Leslie Benzies leaving Rockstar in 2016 and his current studio Build A Rocket Boy are established by the Take-Two litigation that ended in a confidential settlement in February 2019.
