A week before the end of August, Grand Theft Auto VI became the most leaked game ever made. Since 18 August gameplay clips have been going out one after another, the count is up to eight, and this is not somebody re-uploading a video: a person going by Cyberleek is holding a working build and playing it.
Below is the full timeline by date, what the clips actually showed, what the leaker demands, what Take-Two is doing about it, and why the dead man switch story that flooded every channel turned out to be a fabrication.
The timeline: what leaked and when

- 18 August. The first two clips and images of the Leonida map. Both are played as Jason: in one he shoots hoops outside his waterfront house, in the other a delivery truck clips his car, which leads to a fight, the driver beaten to death with a wrench, and a scramble away from the police.
- 18 to 20 August. The count reaches at least five. Driving, a boat cutscene, an aerial clip that shows draw distance and the scale of the map, and a scene inside a strip club.
- 20 to 21 August. Another batch: traffic cameras, car trackers, drivers who fight back, key cloning, changes to gunfights.
- 21 August. Two full minutes of a supercar driving through Vice City. The same day Take-Two goes to court.
- 22 August. An image threatening to release the whole build spreads online. A major outlet runs the story and pulls it a day later: the image was fake.
- After that. The leaker starts selling ad space inside the clips and promoting his own cryptocurrency, promising more scenes if people buy in.
He proved the build is live rather than a pile of borrowed footage in the bluntest way available: he shot a wall with a burst until the holes spelled out Leek.
What people picked out of the clips

The build looks old, dated to 2024 or earlier, so some of this may look different at release. The list is still long.
- Six wanted stars instead of the five in GTA 5. Killing a courier with a wrench earns you two of them.
- Police identify you by three things: clothing, face and car, each with its own icon in the corner. Changing clothes or repainting the car should still work as an escape.
- A stamina meter. It drains to zero while Jason beats the driver, and the edges of the screen darken.
- A stealth indicator. A blue arrow shows how close the police are to spotting you. GTA has not had that before.
- Trait progression in the Red Dead Redemption 2 style: sink a basketball, gain two percent of Focus.
- Karma. A small devil icon with a minus appears once the player keeps hitting a man who is already down. Starting a fight seems fine by the game, senseless killing does not.
- Cars have fuel and engine condition, and the boot holds a loadout menu and four storage slots.
- Money is split: cash on hand and a separate figure next to a house icon, which looks like rent or a bank balance.
- The map shows where the other protagonist is. GTA 5 never did that.
What the leaker wants, and how he is making money from it

In public he positions himself against the all digital future of the industry: he wants Rockstar to commit to physical releases and complains about fake single player expansions. The phrasing is grand. If Cyberleek can reach Rockstar, nobody is safe, and this is a message to every corporation.
Then comes the awkward part. He sells advertising inside the clips and promotes his own cryptocurrency, promising to release more scenes if people buy in harder. Those are the captions you see pasted across the frames circulating on Telegram.
This is where the anti corporate speech falls apart for me. A man who objects to games being turned into money extraction machines hung an ad banner and a token on his leak. That is not a protest, that is a business. Just somebody else product instead of his own.
What Take-Two is doing, and why this is already serious

On 21 August the publisher filed subpoenas against Microsoft and Discord. Both have until 4 September to hand over data: internal investigation records tied to the cyberleek persona on the Microsoft side, and identifying information for every account in the Discord servers connected to the leaks. The sworn declaration states the purpose plainly, to identify the infringer.
In parallel Take-Two keeps sending takedown notices, which is the best confirmation the clips are real. Nobody files copyright claims against fakes.
One number for scale. Take-Two market capitalisation dropped by 2.8 billion dollars in the wake of the leaks. That sounds enormous until you remember the company is worth around 45 billion, and the share price has already returned close to where it started. The market noticed and moved on. The lawyers did not.
Something worth telling readers directly: channels pretending to be the leaker and offering the game itself for download have multiplied. What they hand out is not a build, it is infected files. There is nothing to play and a computer to lose.
The dead man switch story was a fake

This is the version that travelled furthest: the leaker supposedly has an automated system that demands a code every 24 hours, and if he fails to enter it the full build releases itself across every file host on earth.
It did not happen. The image carrying that threat was manufactured and pushed out by people copying Cyberleek for traffic. The outlet that ran the story first retracted it a day later and said so in plain words: the article was built on an image and a discussion that turned out to be fabricated.
The caveat that same outlet made, and I will repeat it honestly: there is no proof the leaker does not have such a mechanism either. But no statement came from him. What came was a forgery. That distinction is the whole difference, and half the headlines right now are standing on the wrong side of it.
What happens next
GTA 6 releases on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with preloading from 12 November. Rockstar has not announced a PC version.
The next date in this story is not a gaming one, it is 4 September, when Microsoft and Discord have to hand the data over. The leaker is behaving loudly, selling ads and flashing a crypto wallet, which is exactly the kind of trail people get found by. I would not bet on him staying anonymous until November.
