An AMD FSR 4 option has turned up in the graphics settings of The Outlast Trials. Red Barrels never announced it: no statement, no line in any changelog.

What exactly showed up

The option sits where the rest of the image scaling lives. Players who found it show the 1.5X quality preset selected. No patch with a description came out, so this looks like a quiet client update or a feature being trialled.

What that means in practice. The option is there and it can be selected, but the game is not officially on the FSR 4 support list. If something misbehaves, there is nobody to report it to yet.

Why it matters

FSR 4 is AMD's neural upscaler, the answer to DLSS 4. It reconstructs a frame from a lower resolution, and unlike earlier FSR versions it does so with a model rather than a stack of filters. The difference shows most on thin detail and in motion, which is exactly what The Outlast Trials is made of: mesh, grates, half darkness and running.

A year ago FSR 4 ran only on the new Radeon RX 9000 cards built on RDNA 4. AMD has been widening that:

  • RX 9000, RDNA 4. Supported from day one, this is the home platform for FSR 4.
  • RX 7000, RDNA 3. AMD opened FSR 4.1 upscaling for these cards in July 2026.
  • RX 6000, RDNA 2. Promised for early 2027.

More than three hundred games support the technology by now. The Outlast Trials is not on the official list, which is what makes the find interesting.

Who this concerns

PC owners with an AMD graphics card, and nobody else. The game is on consoles too, but a change in the PC graphics settings does not reach them. Owners of Nvidia and Intel cards have no use for the option either: FSR 4 needs AMD hardware.

If you have a Radeon, open the graphics settings and look for yourself. The option appearing breaks nothing, and on a modest system the frame rate gain can be worth having.
