On Friday, 2 October, Europe's ratings board PEGI published an 18 rating for GTA 6 with a detailed rundown of the game's most explicit content, then pulled it from its site almost immediately. VGC got to read it first: you can carry cocaine in your inventory and snort it at any time, pay for private dances in clubs, and use some weapons to sever limbs and heads. And on 5 October Rockstar explained why, for all that, GTA 6 will not feature a single real-world politician.
What PEGI's description said

- Violence. Bloody and highly realistic. Some weapons do more damage, up to detailed decapitation and dismemberment.
- Drugs. PEGI calls their use frequent and prominent. The player can take drugs with other characters or straight from the inventory, and can carry cocaine and snort it from their hand whenever they like.
- Sex. Nudity, sex scenes and occasional fetishes. In nightclubs you can pay for a private dance, during which the game lets you touch the dancers.
- Animals. Pets can be harmed, but without the injury detail that human characters get.
The rating itself is no surprise: the US ESRB had already given the game an M, for 17+, and the New Zealand PlayStation Store lists it as R18 with warnings for drug use and sex scenes. The news is in the detail, which usually stays under wraps until launch.
| Who | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| PEGI, Europe | 18, published and pulled | realistic violence with dismemberment, frequent drug use, sex scenes, private dances |
| ESRB, US | M (17+) | blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, drugs and alcohol, in-game purchases |
| PS Store, New Zealand | R18 | drug use, graphic violence, nudity, offensive language, sex scenes |
Why GTA 6 has no real politicians

Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, told Love magazine that Leonida should feel recognisably like present-day Florida, but the satire will not be tied to any real person, event or movement. Politics sits in the background: election signs, robocalls from campaigns, adverts and political talk shows on the radio. He named GTA IV as the series' exception, since post-9/11 homeland security was inseparable from New York.
Rockstar, he said, does not hold up a mirror to reality but blows a subject up into the grotesque until it turns funny: "Otherwise, you could just go outside and live in the real world!" The second reason is practical. GTA takes years to make, and a joke about a six-month trend would be stale by launch. So instead of real stories, the game has its own skewed versions of conspiracy theories and other signs of the times.
GTA 6 arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series in 44 days. Everything known about the date, prices and a PC version is in our 4 October roundup.
