S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has its first big expansion, and it is called Cost of Hope. Update 2.0 landed alongside it, and thirty thousand people came back to the Zone at once. For a game that spent all of July around seven thousand, that is a different order of magnitude.

What the expansion is

Cost of Hope launched on 20 August 2026 across three platforms at once: PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, including PS5 Pro. GSC calls it the first major expansion for Heart of Chornobyl and describes it in one word: massive.

The word is backed by content. Inside is a new storyline that, according to the studio, takes dozens of hours to finish. It is nonlinear, meaning branches rather than a single corridor to the ending. Plus new and returning characters.

  • Two new regions. Among them the legendary Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and Iron Forest.
  • A separate story campaign running dozens of hours, with branching.
  • Update 2.0 is free for everyone, the expansion is sold separately.

The power plant on that list is probably the strongest argument. In the original trilogy the station was the end of the road, and putting it in an expansion reads as a promise to take the story all the way to that place.

Update 2.0 arrived the same day

The expansion did not come alone. GSC released Update 2.0 "Back to the Zone" at the same time, free for every owner of the game. The important part is technical: the project moved to Unreal Engine 5.5.4, and the studio calls it the biggest overhaul of how the Zone looks and feels.

Worth remembering that the game had already been repaired almost without pause for a year and a half. Since November 2024 A-Life, enemy combat behaviour and the economy were rebuilt, and night vision, offset aiming and mutant harvesting were added. Update 2.0 is not the first step towards fixing things, it is the continuation of a long job.

What players are saying

Reviews of the expansion are Mostly Positive, which is Steam's own wording. As this piece was written there were 327 reviews, 235 of them positive, roughly 72 percent.

Steam data as of 21 August 2026. The expansion's sample is still small and will shift noticeably within a week.

That note about sample size is not a formality. Three hundred reviews on day two is very little, and any ratio moves around at that volume. In a week the picture may look better or worse.

Thirty thousand came back to the Zone

The clearest part of this story is not the reviews, it is the player chart.

24-hour peak after the expansion launched30,836
Playing right now17,254
Peak in July 20267,644
All time record, November 2024120,960
Steam Charts data for app 1643320.

Exactly what publishers make expansions for: the player count quadrupled against the July peak. That said, the launch record of 120,960 is still a long way off, so talk of a full return is premature. But a fourfold jump on day two is no accident.

Price and download size

The expansion costs 29.99 dollars. Owners of the Ultimate Edition and of the Season Pass get it free, and it unlocks automatically.

Size is trickier, and precision matters here. GSC did not publish a separate download size for the expansion. What is certain: Steam lists 160 GB of free space in the game's requirements, covering the whole game together with Update 2.0 and the expansion. Clear the space in advance, because the update changes the engine version and will pull down considerably more than a normal patch.

And one requirement people keep forgetting: the game asks for an SSD. On a mechanical hard drive the Zone will stutter as it streams in.

The expansion shipped alongside the free Update 2.0, which changed the game more than its patch notes suggest. The breakdown with numbers is in our piece on the Zone before and after 2.0.
