GSC Game World has released patch 2.0.5 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The studio promises over two hundred fixes, and this is the first substantial update since the Cost of Hope expansion. The list is long and dull, so I pulled out the parts you will feel on your first evening back.

  • Mutants, NPCs and performance
  • Turn your mods off again
A summary of the four headline fixes in patch 2.0.5
Schema by FramesGames

The everyday fixes

Four entries on this list are worth the other two hundred, because they got in the way constantly.

  • Oversensitive controller sticks on PC. The complaint had been running since update 2.0 and is now fixed.
  • Night could get stuck mid playthrough. Time stopped moving and morning never came.
  • The flashlight stayed on if the switch off animation was interrupted by an EMP field or a Spatial Bubble. In the Zone that is a way to die, not a nuisance.
  • Hunger dealt damage after sleeping. You lay down to rest and got up with less health.

More useful entries: system notifications no longer stick on screen, scope aiming is no longer corrupted when you switch to it from offset aiming while firing, and the empty stashes with attachments on saves made before Cost of Hope have finally been filled.

Mutants, NPCs and performance

Most of the list is housekeeping on the behaviour of the Zone's inhabitants, and some of the entries are worth reading for their own sake. NPCs with night vision devices no longer shine their flashlights into the back of their own heads. Dead bodies stopped shifting position when you walk away and return. Characters no longer float above beds after a save is loaded.

NPC hearing in fog, rain and thunder was adjusted separately. Weather used to affect it differently than expected, which changed the whole logic of approaching a camp.

On speed the changes are targeted rather than general. GSC names specific places: the Arena mass fight in the Status quo mission, the Perimeter, and the Uninvited Guests mission. If your frame rate dipped exactly there, it will be better. There is no promise of higher frames across the game in these notes.

Among the small things I cannot leave out: the radio call radius of Faraday anomalies was increased and the delay on the first call removed, prices at some technicians around the map were rebalanced, and missing tracks were added to the Freedom playlist at the power plant.

Turn your mods off again

GSC ends the notes with a warning, and it is not decoration. The gist: the Zone changes, a new update can shift her structure, and modifications may not survive that shift. If performance or stability problems show up after the patch, the advice is to disable mods.

For a game with thousands of mods this is the familiar ritual after every patch. If you have your own set assembled, give the authors a couple of days.

One last thing. This patch fixes a great many story snags specifically: missing NPCs, dialogue through walls, objects that could not be detonated, objectives that could not be closed. If you abandoned a playthrough because a quest jammed, this is the moment to go back and check. What to look for in the Zone first we cover in our reference on unique weapons.
