GSC Game World is releasing a free update for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl called Back to the Zone. It lands on 20 August, but the first breakdowns are already out: testers got the build early and published comparisons against the launch version.

The headline is not the changelog, it is that the game moves to a different engine version. For a project that spent its whole first year being reminded about performance, that is a conversation worth having.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 shipped on Unreal Engine 5.1. Update 2.0 moves it to 5.5.4, and that is not cosmetic: between those versions Epic reworked Nanite and Lumen considerably, which is precisely where this game hurt.

Moving a game this size onto a new engine version mid life is expensive and risky, and studios usually decline. This one went for it, and the promise is that traversal stutter, the jolts on an empty road, should be gone.

Comparisons are already up. MxBenchmarkPC ran patch 2.0 against the launch version and put the performance gain from UE 5.5 straight in the title.

The second breakdown, from zWORMz Gaming, was captured on a GeForce RTX 5090 and shows the changes side by side, frame against frame. The top end card is not an accident: it keeps the hardware out of the way so you can see what actually changed in the game.

One caveat worth keeping in mind. These are enthusiast videos on their own rigs, not measurements taken to a single methodology. They show the order of magnitude honestly, but do not carry the exact numbers over to your own machine.

The second thing the comparisons make obvious is the lighting. It has been reworked across the game: light now bleeds through foliage, cracks and gaps in structures in a way it could not before. Shadows, reflections and vegetation were touched up along with it.

There is new weather too, fog and light rain. And the fog is not a layer painted over the frame, it is a condition: it hinders you and your enemies alike, and it changes how far the AI can see and how well it can hear.

What else is in the box

  • A-Life expanded. More faction and mutant encounters across the Zone, and enemies now loot the bodies of the fallen.
  • Binoculars, three kinds. Something the Zone has been missing since day one.
  • Four new weapons added to the base game rather than to the paid expansion.
  • Your own difficulty. Custom Rules lets you assemble the settings yourself instead of picking one of three presets.
  • A statistics page in the PDA. At last you can see what went where.

Update 2.0 arrives on 20 August and is free for every owner on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The PS5 version, for the record, appeared on 20 November 2025, exactly a year after PC and Xbox.

The first paid expansion, Cost of Hope, comes out the same day. Patch and expansion are separate things: the engine, the light and the fog go to everybody, the story is sold on its own.

The developer, in case anyone has forgotten, is GSC Game World. The studio is Ukrainian, and it finished this game under circumstances in which nothing usually gets finished.

The update has shipped, so there is a result to compare rather than a promise: the player numbers and the full breakdown are in our piece on the Zone before and after 2.0. We also covered the three new binoculars and where to buy them separately.
