For a year and a half the Zone ran on a simple rule: if you wanted to see what was on that hill, you pulled out a scoped rifle or you walked over and looked. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 shipped without binoculars at all, even though half the cast of the old trilogy carried a pair. Update 2.0, released on 20 August, fixed that with room to spare: there are three of them, and they differ by more than price.

What was actually added

The wording in the GSC Game World patch notes is short: not one but three types of binoculars are now at a stalker disposal, and you are invited to try the FOB-45, the Yastrub and the Fighter to find your own balance of price and quality. That is all the studio said. No prices, no magnification figures, no inventory weight. Everything else players worked out in the first day.

It was a long wait. In our S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 review the missing binoculars were one of those small things that keep nagging: the map is large, the distances are honest, and scouting meant looking through a weapon sight, which means standing there with a gun up and a good chance of catching a bullet from whoever you are studying.

The difference is not magnification. It is what the binoculars draw on top of the picture. The cheapest one behaves like plain glass with a basic distance readout, the most expensive one adds affiliation, so you can see at a glance whether that squad is yours or not.

ModelRangefinderWhat else it does
FOB-45analoguenothing extra, clean glass with a distance readout
Yastrubdigitalranges targets more precisely, easier display to read
Fighterdigitalaffiliation scanner, tells enemies from allies
Line-up from the GSC Game World patch notes. The differences between models come from player findings in the first day after 2.0 shipped.

The practical take is simple. If you only want to judge whether a shot will carry, the FOB-45 is enough. If you play from a sniper rifle and want honest metres, take the Yastrub. The Fighter earns its price if you spend a lot of time in contested ground and would rather not open fire on neutrals: reading affiliation saves ammunition and reputation at once.

Where to buy them

You do not need to comb the Zone for the full set. Two stops cover it.

Both of the higher-end pairs sit in the same trade list, so you can pick them up in a single visit.

Binoculars also turn up as loot, but do not count on it. Drops are random and the spot where you get lucky will not be the spot where anyone else did. Walking to a trader is cheaper.

What binoculars change in play

More than you would think. Update 2.0 reworked how the inhabitants of the Zone behave, and points of interest like campfires and bus stops now tend to be occupied, not always by whoever you expected. Being able to study one of those from a distance without raising a weapon changes how you move: a route becomes something you plan rather than something you test with your own body.

Binoculars also pay off in the new weather. Update 2.0 added a fog mechanic and reworked cloudy and rainy conditions, visibility dropped, and the gap between a plain sight and a proper rangefinder became obvious. We went through the rest of the changes in our piece on the Zone before and after Update 2.0, and covered the story add-on in the news about the Cost of Hope release.
