Shadow of Chernobyl has seven endings, and five of them are picked not by the story but by a single function in the game's scripts. It looks at three things in order: whether Lukash and Voronin are dead, how much money you are carrying, and what your reputation is. Which is why a player who simply walks up to the Wish Granter almost always gets the same finale and assumes there is nothing else. The two real endings sit behind a different door, and getting to it takes work.
Below: what gets checked and in what order, what each false ending looks like, which road leads to the real one, and what to finish before the point of no return. Ending spoilers ahead, this is a breakdown rather than a review.
What the Wish Granter actually checks

The conditions live in the function sar_monolith_miracle inside xr_effects.script. The checks run strictly top to bottom, and the first one that matches ends the whole thing: the rest are never reached.
- Both leaders dead. With Lukash and Voronin both killed, you get the ending about ruling the world. Money and reputation are not read at all.
- 50,000 on you. The next check is money. Exactly fifty thousand already counts.
- Reputation 1000 or above. That is the top of the scale, the excellent band.
- Reputation minus 1000 or below. The bottom of the scale, the terrible band.
- Everything else. The fallback, the immortality ending. It asks nothing of you.
Here is a discrepancy that travels through guide after guide. The English wiki says money overrides everything and that the ruling ending additionally requires under 50,000. In the script itself the both-leaders-dead check comes first and returns before the game ever looks at your wallet. The Russian wiki matches the script. One more myth from the same page: that the immortality ending depends on how many medkits and artifacts you burned through. No such check exists in the function.
And the reason most players only ever saw riches or the vanishing Zone. The game has a known reputation bug where the value swings between the extremes on its own, regardless of what you do. So your finale was often chosen by a broken counter rather than by your playstyle.
The five false endings

All five fire in the same place: the ruins of reactor four, when you step up to the Wish Granter and press use. The game ends right there, and loading a save is the only way back.
- Rule the world. Strelok asks for power, is lifted off the floor, his soul is pulled into the Monolith and the empty suit drops.
- Riches. He asks for money, bolts and nuts rain from the ceiling, he sees gold, and the roof comes down on him.
- The Zone disappears. He opens his eyes in a green field, and the eyes are white with no irises. The Zone is gone for him because he is blind.
- Destruction of humanity. Flashes of nuclear blasts, then he stands in complete darkness. The English line is softer than the Russian one: it talks about controlling mankind where the original says destroying it.
- Immortality. The famous one: Strelok is turned into a metal statue. Technically the wish was granted.
The road to the real finale

The true ending starts long before Pripyat, and it is easy to miss simply because nobody tells you that you need a decoder.
- Yantar. Shut down the psi-emitter in Lab X-16, take the documents, search Ghost's body, then Strelok's hideout in the Agroprom Underground.
- Cordon. Talk to Guide at the farmstead ruins. If he is dead, the same information sits on his PDA.
- Agroprom. Meet Doctor. He explains that the Wish Granter is a machine in a lab next to the Sarcophagus and hands you the coordinates of a Pripyat stash along with the key.
- Pripyat. Polissya Hotel, room 26 on the first floor. The decoder is there, along with documents and a SKAT-9M military suit.
- The Sarcophagus. On the top floor, skip the southern teleport, that one leads to the Wish Granter. Go north, up the ladder, use the decoder on the door. Decoding takes about thirty seconds, and Monolith troops teleport in behind you the whole time.
Then comes Lab X-19. Around twenty eight Monolith soldiers are waiting, and the door to the control room only opens once the elite squad is dead. Six projectors power the Wish Granter hologram, and a knife's secondary attack destroys each one instantly. The game only spawns Pyrogeists after you damage the first projector, so there is no rush.
A detail for people who enjoy breaking other people's plans: the Sarcophagus door also opens if you drop an equipped Gauss rifle against it. Which means both true endings are reachable without ever meeting Guide or Doctor.
The two real endings

In the control room the C-Consciousness talks to you. It explains what the Zone is, why the noosphere experiment happened, who Strelok was, and offers him a place among them. The choice is simple and final.
Accept. Strelok lies down in a stasis capsule, electrodes go on, the lid closes. Final scene: Doctor in the swamps with his pseudodog, saying he has not seen Strelok in a long time. This ending is treated as non-canon.
Refuse. You are thrown outside, onto the roofs and gantries of the power plant, and what players call the teleport gauntlet begins: fifteen portals, over seventy opponents, among them around ten Gauss snipers and eight rocket troopers. One portal drops you into Sidorovich's bunker for a second. The last one puts you in the room with the C-Consciousness pods, and Strelok empties an AKM-74/2U into them. Then he is lying in a clean field, a dragonfly takes off, and the mark is gone from his arm. This is the canon one.
The point of no return and what to do first

The hard line is the transition from the Pripyat stadium to the power plant. Walking in through the main gate triggers a cutscene and dumps you straight at the level exit, with no way back to any earlier area. If you want to look around the stadium itself, use one of the side gates and the cutscene never fires.
At the plant a blowout timer starts, and here the sources disagree: the location page says five minutes to reach the Sarcophagus, while the same wiki's walkthrough says about ten with a warning at six minutes left. Either way, sightseeing is off the table.
- The decoder. The big one. Without it both true endings are locked, and it sits in Pripyat, which is easy to run through on the main quest without ever entering the hotel.
- Fang's stash. The one-of-a-kind Exoskeleton PNB-4UZ and a Mama's Beads artifact. The coordinates drop from a randomly named dead loner in the Yantar tunnels as you leave X-16. Miss the body, miss the stash.
- A rifle and ammo. There are no traders past Pripyat. The easiest sniper rifle comes off Monolith troops in the Red Forest.
- Anti-rads. The whole Sarcophagus is irradiated.
- If you want the ruling ending. Lukash and Voronin have to be dead before you leave for Pripyat. There is a quest for Lukash; Voronin you kill yourself, which turns Duty hostile.
Achievements and the console editions

The 2007 original has no achievements whatsoever. The 44 of them arrived with the Enhanced Edition and the console collection. Almost none of them are tied to a specific ending: one fires for finishing at all, one for visiting the Wish Granter, one for reaching the C-Consciousness. The only one that demands a refusal is meeting Sidorovich in his bunker during the teleport gauntlet, which you cannot reach any other way.
The console collection keeps the same ending conditions. Mods there are limited to textures, models, sound and video, scripts cannot be touched, which means the function with all those checks stayed exactly as it was. If you want to see how the series handles similar forks today, we have every ending of the second game and the path A-Life took from 2007 to now.
