Counter-Strike 2 adds a 3v3 Rush mode, and Premier now picks maps instead of banning them

Valve has pushed a big Counter-Strike 2 update. The headline is Rush, a new mode of short three-versus-three matches with its own queue. Premier map selection changes too, and the patch adds silent reloads, reworked crosshairs and the return of clan tags.

How Rush works

Teams of three push through a chain of small battle arenas towards the enemy castle. You win a round by wiping the other team or by holding the tower when time runs out. Budget and time are tight, and the arenas are picked at random for every match, so no two games play the same. There is also a Rush leaderboard for your friends list.

The layout sheet Valve shared shows 15 arenas, from Spire and Wallbang to King of the Hill and Horseshoe. It is aimed at anyone who does not have half an hour for a competitive match, since a game of Rush is much shorter.

Premier: maps are now picked, not banned

Until now teams took turns removing maps until one was left. Now it works the other way round: team one picks a map, team two picks two, and team one picks a final one. The match is then played on a random map out of those four. Valve's reasoning is that if you put the time into learning a map, you should get to play it more often.

What else changed

  • Silent reloads. Hold the reload key and the magazine goes in without a sound, but it takes noticeably longer. Unscoping a sniper rifle is now silent as well.
  • Blood and bullet impacts are more visible, so hits read better on walls.
  • Crosshairs no longer depend on screen resolution, get their own settings tab and new shapes. The default is now Dynamic Quad.
  • Clan tags are back: pick a Steam group in your profile and its tag shows next to your name.
  • Small stuff: stickers on the C4, per-mode music volume, a new Starjunk 95 music kit, and chickens now take damage from the Zeus x27.

For competitive play the silent reload matters most: in CS, sound has always been part of the information you get about the enemy, and now there will be less of it. How that plays out will be clearer in a couple of weeks, once tournaments move to the new build.
