Opening Night Live brought a new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039. It is called Renegade, it runs two minutes, and it is the first showing that makes clear how far the game is moving back off the surface and into the tunnels. The trailer is embedded below.
What is in it
The protagonist, known as The Stranger, works his way through a Moscow held by the Novoreich. There is stealth and there is open combat, and the camera moves between the underground and the surface: Sevastopolskaya station, flooded stretches of tunnel, burnt out streets above.
- Far more locations than the first showing. Tunnels, occupied stations, the surface and water, all inside two minutes.
- The focus is on tight spaces again. After the open expanses of Metro Exodus the series returns to oppressive underground, and the shots make that obvious.
- The hero has a voice. For the first time in the series the player character speaks, which is its own change after the silent Artyom.
- The Stranger is not Artyom. He is an exiled Spartan pulled back into the Moscow metro.
When and where
The release window is unchanged, February 2027, on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Developed by 4A Games, published by Deep Silver. At the show itself the game is playable: the demo sits in Hall 9.1 from 26 to 30 August.

Of everything shown yesterday and today, this trailer got to me the most. Not because it is pretty, it was pretty last time too. Because for the first time it is clear what you actually play: not an open world with a base camp, but old Metro, where you get a corridor, a lamp and three bullets.
