Radeon RX 7900 XTX: BIOS update from two vendors, no known attacks
SHARE
PlatformsPC

If you own a Radeon RX 7000 card, it is worth checking your card maker's website. In early October Sapphire and Gigabyte posted new BIOS versions for cards from the RX 7600 to the RX 7900 XTX, citing a vulnerability found together with AMD. Nobody has said what the hole actually is. Asked by ComputerBase, AMD replied that details will come later, that it has seen no attacks, and that you should update as soon as your brand offers the firmware.

What we know so far

Radeon RX 7800 XT: the update covers cards from RX 7600 to RX 7900 XTX
Radeon RX 7800 XT
  • Sapphire went first. Its support page lists updates for models from the RX 7600 to the RX 7900 XTX, with a single reason given: a security issue identified together with AMD.
  • Gigabyte is more specific. It mentions vulnerabilities in the AMD VBIOS and points to bulletin AMD-SN-6023, which does not yet appear on AMD's security page.
  • AMD's position. Fixes ship ahead of public disclosure so people have time to update. The company knows of no cases of the flaw being exploited in practice.

It is a familiar pattern: the patch goes out quietly, and the description of the hole follows a few weeks later, once most people have updated. Since AMD openly mentions a future disclosure, the AMD-SN-6023 bulletin will most likely appear later.

Should you flash your graphics card BIOS

If you have a Sapphire or Gigabyte card, yes, but carefully. Take the firmware only from the page for your exact model, use only the maker's own tool, and check the board revision before you start. Install the latest Adrenalin driver first, as ComputerBase recommends; members of its forum report the update went smoothly. Do not power off during the flash: an interrupted BIOS write is the easiest way to brick a card.

If your card is from another brand, wait. Never flash firmware from a different manufacturer or for a different model. And if you are not confident, skipping this update for now is a perfectly reasonable choice until we know what it fixes and whether it matters for a home PC.
