The Radeon RX 9070 XT has passed the GeForce RTX 3080 in the Steam hardware survey. In August it sits on 1.46 percent of surveyed machines against 1.38 for the 3080, and the two swapped places in exactly this month's data.
That is a bigger deal than the two decimal places suggest, because of what else is in the table. The 9070 XT is now the most common Radeon graphics card on Steam, and it is not close.
The numbers, and the month it happened
Look at the second bar first. The RTX 3080 was a halo card in 2020 and it has been in the top twenty of this survey ever since. It is now behind a Radeon that most people have not held in their hands.
Then look at the gap after that. The next Radeon down is the RX 6600 on 0.83 percent, and after it the RX 9060 XT on 0.80. The RX 9070 XT has nearly twice the share of any other Radeon card in the survey.
The crossover itself is worth seeing month by month, because it did not happen slowly.

In July they were level at 1.40 each. One rising, one falling, and in August they crossed. That is as clean a handover as this survey ever produces.
What this does not mean
Worth stating plainly, because this is where the story usually gets stretched. The RX 9070 XT is not the most popular card on Steam. It is not close to that either.
The most common card is still the GeForce RTX 3060 on 3.92 percent, which is nearly three times the 9070 XT. Behind it come the RTX 4060 Laptop GPU on 3.84, the RTX 5070 on 3.77 and the RTX 4060 on 3.60. Roughly two dozen NVIDIA models sit above the 9070 XT before you reach it.
The accurate version of the headline is narrower and still good: the most popular Radeon card, and now ahead of the RTX 3080.
Why one Radeon and not the rest
The interesting question is not why the 9070 XT is up. It is why the rest of the Radeon line is nowhere.
- The whole previous generation is smaller than this one card. RX 7800 XT on 0.63, RX 7600 on 0.49, RX 7900 XTX on 0.42, RX 7900 XT on 0.33, RX 7700 XT on 0.25. Not one of them ever got near where the 9070 XT is now.
- Its own generation has not followed it. The RX 9060 XT is on 0.80 and the plain RX 9070 on just 0.20. The success is one model deep.
- The old cards are draining away. Every RX 6000 and RX 500 entry in the table is flat or falling. The 9070 XT is one of only three Radeon lines gaining share this month.
So this is not AMD rising across the board. It is one card that landed at the right price with the right amount of memory, doing the work of an entire lineup.
How this fits with everything else we know
Put it next to the two other things the same survey and the same market said this month, and the picture stops being contradictory.
AMD is on 46.47 percent of processors in this survey and climbing steadily. AMD is on 18.68 percent of graphics cards and has barely moved in eighteen months. Those two facts sat awkwardly together until you look at which Radeon is doing the moving: one model, growing at about six hundredths of a point a month.
At that rate a single card does not shift a vendor's share. It just proves the vendor can still make one people want. We went through the processor side of the same survey in the piece on AMD hitting a record among CPUs.
What it means if you are buying
Popularity is not performance, and a survey is not a benchmark. But an installed base does two useful things for you, and both are real.
- More owners means more testing. A card this common gets attention in driver work and in game patches, and that shows up months later as fewer strange bugs.
- It is the card everyone else is comparing against. When a benchmark round-up needs one Radeon, this is now the one, which makes it easier to find real numbers before you spend.
What has not changed is the caveat we put on every survey story. This is a sample of machines Valve happened to ask, not a sales figure, and it has visibly misfired before. Two hundredths of a point is not a trend. Eight months of one line rising while every neighbour falls is.
