AMD put two new processors on its own website on 10 September and said nothing about either one. No press release, no price, no launch event. Two product pages appeared where there had been nothing the day before, and that was the whole announcement.
One of them, the Ryzen 5 7500, is a Ryzen 5 7500F with a small graphics chip added. Not thrilling. The other is a Ryzen 5 5500F for the elderly AM4 socket, and that one is strange enough to be worth your time, because AMD took a Vermeer die and threw away half of its L3 cache.
Ryzen 5 5500F and the cache that is not there

Six cores, twelve threads, Zen 3, 65 watts. So far this reads like every other budget AM4 chip of the last four years. The interesting line is further down the spec sheet: 16 MB of L3, where every other six core Vermeer part carries 32.
This is not the same trick as the old Ryzen 5 5500. That chip was built on Cezanne, which is an integrated graphics design with the graphics switched off, and it had 16 MB of L3 because that is simply how much Cezanne has. The 5500F is Vermeer, the proper desktop silicon with two dies and a separate input output chip, and Vermeer six core parts have 32 MB. AMD has cut half of it away on purpose.
If you have ever wondered why people pay a premium for the X3D chips, this is the same lever pulled in the opposite direction. Games love L3. Halving it on a gaming processor is the one specification I would not want to see halved.
It is not simply a slower 5600F

Here is where it gets interesting. Compared with last year's Ryzen 5 5600F, the 5500F loses half the cache and gains 400 MHz of boost. Same 3.0 GHz base, same 65 watt figure, same PCIe 4.0 with 24 lanes, same Wraith Stealth cooler in the box.
- 4.4 GHz against 4.0 GHz. The cheaper looking chip is the faster clocked one, which almost never happens inside a family.
- 16 MB against 32 MB. The trade for that clock is severe and it lands exactly where games feel it.
- PCIe 4.0 either way. Worth knowing if you are eyeing a cheap card, because the RX 7600, RTX 5050 and RTX 5060 all run on eight lanes and lose real performance on a PCIe 3.0 board.
Which of the two wins depends entirely on what you run. Something that fits inside 16 MB will happily take the extra 400 MHz. Something that does not will spend its day walking out to main memory, and no clock speed rescues that.
Ryzen 5 7500, a 7500F that can show a picture

The AM5 half of the story is much shorter. Six cores, twelve threads, Zen 4, 3.7 GHz base and up to 5.0 GHz boost, 6 MB of L2 and 32 MB of L3, 65 watts. Every one of those numbers matches the Ryzen 5 7500F that has been on sale since July 2023.
The one difference is a graphics unit. Two RDNA 2 compute units running at up to 2200 MHz, the same modest thing that sits inside most Ryzen 7000 desktop chips.
Two compute units, and what they are actually for

Not for playing anything. Two compute units will put a desktop on screen and decode video, and that is roughly the end of the list.
It matters anyway, and anyone who has built a machine knows why. Your graphics card dies and you still want to reach the BIOS. You are testing a new build and the card has not arrived yet. You are putting together something that will sit in a cupboard with no monitor attached most of the time. AMD's own page for the 7500F answers the graphics question with the words "Discrete Graphics Card Required", which is a polite way of saying you are stuck if the card is the thing that broke.
Small feature, real relief on the day you need it.
No price, no date, and a boxed part number

AMD published no pricing and no availability for either chip, which is why the first read on this was that they must be aimed at system builders or at a few specific markets. The product pages argue otherwise. Both list regional availability as global, both come with a Wraith Stealth cooler, and both carry a boxed part number: 100-100001905BOX for the 5500F and 100-100002264BOX for the 7500. Boxes with coolers in them are made for shops, not for factories.
TechPowerUp spotted a listing at Scan in the United Kingdom at 87.98 pounds for the 5500F and 167.99 pounds for the 7500. Treat those as one retailer's opening prices rather than an announcement, because that is what they are.
Until real prices land there is not much of a verdict to give, and I would rather say that than pretend otherwise. The 7500 is easy: if it costs about what a 7500F costs, take it, the graphics unit is free insurance. The 5500F is the one to watch carefully, because a 6 core Vermeer at 4.4 GHz sounds excellent right up until you remember what is missing behind it. If the price sits close to a 5600, the 5600 is still the chip I would buy.
