Blizzard announced a new StarCraft game at BlizzCon 2026, and it is not a strategy game. The project is simply called StarCraft and it is an open world shooter. It is planned for spring 2030. This is the first new game in the series since Legacy of the Void came out in 2015.

The trailer is fully cinematic with no gameplay. The lead, a Marine named Holt, trains in the Dominion army while Mengsk shouts over the loudspeakers. Then he is dropped onto a planet, where a wave of Zerglings runs him over almost at once. A classic Zerg rush, just like 1998.

  • Genre. Open world shooter.
  • Release. Spring 2030.
  • Director. Dan Hay, formerly lead producer on the Far Cry series.
  • Setting. Well after the events of the StarCraft II campaign.
  • Gap in the series. 11 years without a new game since Legacy of the Void.

The stills on the official site show where Blizzard is heading: giant Zerg structures in the fog, heavy Dominion machinery and soldiers whose odds look clearly worse than the enemy's. Dan Hay's experience with Far Cry's open worlds will obviously help here, but how that fits StarCraft, where armies decide the outcome rather than a single soldier, is something we will only see closer to launch.

Sources

The announcement of the open world shooter StarCraft for spring 2030 comes from Blizzard's official BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony recap. Project lead Dan Hay, formerly lead producer on Far Cry, the trailer's content with the Marine Holt, Mengsk and the Zerg rush, and the lack of gameplay in the video come from Game Informer and VGC. The setting well after the StarCraft II campaign and this being the first new game in the series since Legacy of the Void in 2015 come from Game Informer. The video is an official upload from the StarCraft channel. Stills come from the gallery on the official StarCraft website.
