Over the past year, Xbox 360 games have started getting something their publishers never gave them: native PC versions. Fans are making them, and they are not emulators. The game's code is translated ahead of time from the Xbox 360's processor language into C++ and built into a regular Windows executable, sometimes a Linux one too. The result runs at high resolutions, at 60 fps or more, on ultrawide monitors and with mods. The newest example, The Darkness, arrived on 15 September. Below: how it works, which ports you can download now and what you need to run them. Two caveats up front: the popular Gears of War 2 PC port is built a different way, and almost nothing works on PS3 yet.
- What recompilation is, and why it is not emulation
- The Darkness: the newest port, still in progress
- Sonic Unleashed: where it all started
- Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey: Mistwalker's RPGs
- Skate 3: the most popular port of 2026
- Fable 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2: Microsoft exclusives
- Horror: Silent Hill: Downpour and Deadly Premonition
- King Kong and the rest
- Gears of War 2: a port exists, but it is not a recompilation
- What about PS3?
- All the ports in one table
- How to run them, and what to avoid
What recompilation is, and why it is not emulation

An emulator such as Xenia pretends to be an Xbox 360 while you play, which costs a lot of performance. Static recompilation does the work once, in advance: the game's PowerPC machine code is translated into C++, and that is compiled into a program for a regular x86 processor. The graphics have to be rewritten for DirectX 12 or Vulkan, and that is where the high frame rates and settings come from.
- N64Recomp proved the idea: Zelda 64: Recompiled shipped on it in May 2024.
- XenonRecomp from the hedge-dev team did the same for Xbox 360. It went public on 1 March 2025 alongside the first port, Sonic Unleashed.
- ReXGlue SDK arrived in February 2026, grew out of work on the Xenia emulator and now underpins most of this year's ports.
- ps3recomp appeared in March 2026 to do the same for PS3, but for now it is a developer toolkit rather than finished games.
Every project follows the same rule: the port contains none of the game's files. Code, textures and audio come from your own copy, dumped from your own Xbox 360 or disc.
The Darkness: the newest port, still in progress

Starbreeze's 2007 shooter never came to PC; Steam only has the sequel. The Darkness Recomp by Porting Pete appeared on 15 September 2026, and the current build is 0.1.4 from 4 October. The code was translated to C++ with XenonRecomp, and the game renders through DirectX 11. It has mouse and controller support, resolution choice, field of view, a frame cap, key remapping, saves and a local achievement list, and DSOGaming counted 60 fps and ultrawide support on version 0.1.2.
The README is upfront about the limits: every build is still a pre-release, you need an extracted copy of your own disc of the supported revision, an ISO alone is not enough, and title updates are not supported. It runs on Windows 10 and 11 only, there is no Linux build, and Steam Deck has not been tested. Time Extension noticed that OpenAI's Codex is listed among the project's contributors.
Sonic Unleashed: where it all started

Unleashed Recompiled from hedge-dev came out on 1 March 2025 and is still the most polished port of the lot. The latest version is 1.0.3 from April 2025. It offers high resolutions, ultrawide support, high frame rates, mods through Hedge Mod Manager and achievements, with builds for Windows and Linux, and it runs on Steam Deck. You need a US or European copy, as the Japanese one is not supported, the title update is required, and the authors strongly recommend the DLC because it brings the high-quality lighting.
Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey: Mistwalker's RPGs

re:Blue from the zolaware team launched at the end of August 2026 and is already on version 1.3.1. This is the RPG from the creators of Final Fantasy and Dragon Ball that spent 20 years locked to the Xbox 360. The port runs on Windows, Linux, macOS and Steam Deck, with 4K, an unlocked frame rate and mod support. PC Gamer held it up as proof of how good fan ports can be when they are not hastily vibe-coded. You will need all three discs of the US or European release.

Lost Odyssey has a port too: LostOdysseyRecomp appeared on 6 September, and version 0.8.21 came out on 4 October. The author says plainly that no one has tested a full playthrough yet, so for now it is for the curious.
Skate 3: the most popular port of 2026

Skate 3 Recomp came out on 4 June 2026 and has more GitHub stars than any other port this year. In version 2.0 its author, Alex McHugh, replaced the emulated graphics with his own DirectX 12 and Vulkan renderer, more than doubling the frame rate. Pointing it at your own ISO is enough. There are builds for Windows and Linux, plus an experimental macOS one.
Fable 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2: Microsoft exclusives

Fable 2 Recomp by himdo came out on 6 September, and version 1.4.1 arrived on 5 October. It has a 60 fps mode, a choice of DirectX 12 or Vulkan, and mouse and keyboard controls. DSOGaming called it early in September, but the author has since posted a video of a full playthrough.

Ninja's Dawn by TheSaltTrader brings the original 2008 Ninja Gaiden II to PC, not the Ninja Gaiden 2 Black remaster. It is built on ReXGlue and, since version 1.1.2, renders through its own DirectX 12 renderer, with frame rates from 30 to 144, ultrawide support and an upscaled texture pack. You can add the DLC by copying your own files from the console. The latest version, 1.1.7, came out on 30 September. You need Windows 10 or 11, a DirectX 12 GPU with 2 GB of memory and about 8 GB of disk space.
Horror: Silent Hill: Downpour and Deadly Premonition

Both ports come from the same author, LittleBitUA. DownpourRecomp came out on 27 June 2026 and gives Silent Hill: Downpour an unlocked 60 fps; the latest version is 1.1.8 from 2 September. DPRecomp brings the original Xbox 360 Deadly Premonition to PC with 60 fps and mouse and keyboard; it is on version 2.0.14 from 3 October. Unlike Downpour, Deadly Premonition already has an official PC release, The Director's Cut on Steam, so the port is for those who want the console original specifically.

King Kong and the rest

On 5 October DSOGaming covered TekRantGaming's port of the Xbox 360 version of Peter Jackson's King Kong: up to 8K and up to 240 fps, with version 1.2.0 following that evening. Beyond that there are about ten more ports that get little coverage:
- Spider-Man: Edge of Time, version 1.0.0 from 4 October, for Windows, macOS and Linux.
- Ace Combat 6, beta 1.0.0-beta.2 from 17 August.
- LEGO Dimensions and Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, early builds updated almost daily.
- Metal Slug XX: according to Generation Amiga, files from the Steam version will not work; you need the Xbox 360 copy.
- GoldenEye 007: the Xbox Live Arcade remaster that never shipped. It was never on sale, so there is no legal way to dump your own copy, and the author says the project is a work in progress and that AI was used in making it.
Gears of War 2: a port exists, but it is not a recompilation

A PC version of Gears of War 2 made the news in July, but it works differently. Gears of War 2: Hollow by the modder xHeliosx is built from a leaked 2008 Windows developer build, not from the Xbox 360 game's code. According to PC Gamer and Notebookcheck, it has the campaign, co-op, Horde and DLC, up to 4K and over 200 fps, but there are lighting glitches, and the author says he simply did not test online play. The launcher is on ModDB; the remaining files were shared through the author's Discord, which could not cope with the rush. The difference matters: here you are running leaked Microsoft code, not your own copy of the game.
What about PS3?
| Game | Status in ps3recomp |
|---|---|
| The Simpsons Arcade Game | playable, stage 1 can be completed, 28-49 fps |
| Tokyo Jungle | reaches the menus |
| You Don't Know Jack | reaches gameplay |
| flOw, Twisted Metal | partly working |
Things are far more modest here. The PS3's Cell processor has separate helper cores called SPUs, which makes its code much harder to translate. The ps3recomp tool from sp00nznet appeared in March 2026, with version 0.12.1 released on 10 September, but its README lists only one playable game, the Simpsons arcade title from PSN, and that is the author's own assessment. We found no ports of big exclusives such as Ratchet & Clank or Metal Gear Solid 4. For PS3 games on PC, the RPCS3 emulator remains the way.

How to run them, and what to avoid

- Your own copy. The ports do not include the game. You need an image of your own disc or files dumped from your own Xbox 360, and some ports also need the title update and DLC. Each project's README says which disc revision works.
- Official repositories only. Popular ports attract clones offering "ready-made builds". The GTA IV port, for example, which its own authors say is not meant for public use, already has a fork on GitHub with a release posted hours after it was created. Download only from the original project's Releases page.
- Expect bugs. Most ports are under two months old and update several times a week. Saves can break between versions.
- Steam Deck. Sonic Unleashed and Blue Dragon, which have Linux builds, work reliably. The rest go through Proton with no guarantees.
We found no public takedown demands from Microsoft, 2K, Sega or Sony. In short: you can already play about fifteen Xbox 360 games natively on PC, the most polished being Sonic Unleashed, Blue Dragon and Skate 3; the fresh The Darkness, Fable 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2 ports are moving fast; Gears of War 2 runs on a leaked build; and recompilation's moment on PS3 has not arrived yet.
