Nexus Mods lists 1,960 mods for Stalker 2, and a big chunk of the most downloaded ones broke on 20 August. Update 2.0 moved the game to Unreal Engine 5.5.4, and GSC told players outright to delete their mods and only reinstall them once authors shipped 2.0 versions. Below is what survived the move, by category: performance, weapons, graphics, carry weight, UI and A-Life. Every pick has a file uploaded after 2.0 or an explicit compatibility note from its author.
- What Update 2.0 broke, and what happens to your saves
- How to install: the ~mods folder, Workshop and mod.io
- Performance and graphics mods: one for frame rate, not three
- Weapon and ballistics mods
- Carry weight and inventory mods
- UI, quality of life and a livelier Zone
- Mods on console: yes on Xbox, no on PS5
Three things up front. Mods on PC switch off achievements. Xbox has mods, PS5 still doesn't. And if the game starts crashing after a patch, every 2.0.x note from GSC says the same first step: turn your mods off.
What Update 2.0 broke, and what happens to your saves

Before 2.0 GSC was blunt: delete your mods and reinstall them when they're updated, because running old versions can cause instability and performance problems. Authors confirmed it. The Immersive HUD author called 2.0 "breaking changes to all existing mods", and NPC Combat Overhaul had to change its whole folder layout. The ones that held up were built with "bpatch", the official config-patch method added in 1.6, which edits individual fields instead of replacing whole files.
- Unmodded saves carry over to 2.0 and Cost of Hope intact, GSC promises.
- Modded saves depend on the mod. Stalker Unlimited needs a new game. A-Life Uh.. Found A Way leaves a safe-removal file that has to stay in the folder or saves can crash. Back up your save folder before a big overhaul; that's just common sense.
- Achievements. GSC: a modded game disables achievements, and that covers ~mods, the Workshop and mod.io alike. There is a workaround, the S2AE mod, but it's a winmm.dll proxy next to the exe and Windows Defender flags it. The author says it's their own code; GSC says third-party tools are at your own risk.
- If the game won't launch. Since 1.7.1 there's a fail-safe for mods that block startup; if that doesn't help, delete ~mods. Some weather mods also ask you to clear the cache in AppData\Local\Stalker2.
How to install: the ~mods folder, Workshop and mod.io

There are two official routes. Steam Workshop and mod.io have worked since patch 1.5: subscribe and the mod mounts itself, and mod.io opens straight from the game menu. The Workshop has 562 mods right now, mod.io 365. Everything else, which is most of Nexus, goes into the ~mods folder by hand.
- Steam, GOG, Epic: inside the game folder, Stalker2\Content\Paks\~mods. The folder doesn't exist by default, so create it.
- Game Pass and the Xbox app on PC: XboxGames\game folder\Content\Stalker2\Content\Paks\~mods. Mod authors spell the top folder differently, especially since the Xbox Play Anywhere switch in March 2026, so navigate by the path from Content down.
- Since 2.0 many mods ship as a folder with .pak, .ucas and .utoc files, and you copy the whole folder. If Windows complains the path is too long, enable long paths or drop the files in without extra nesting, as the author asks.
- Load order. Files load alphabetically and the last one wins, which is why authors put z at the start of names and _P at the end. Since 1.7 the game itself pops up a list of conflicting mods and writes it to Mod conflicts.csv in AppData. The free CoMod by Reliser lets you check before launching.
- Uninstalling, per GSC: unsubscribe in the Workshop; unsubscribe in mod.io and delete the mod.io\5761 folders in C:\Users\Public and AppData\Local; manual mods go with the ~mods folder.
That's GSC's official trailer for Zone Kit Phase 2, the free toolset on the Epic Games Store. Since 2.0 mods can add quests, voiceover, translations and their own save data, so the next wave is likely to be story add-ons rather than settings tweaks.
Performance and graphics mods: one for frame rate, not three

The rule here: one performance mod. Optimized Tweaks says it's incompatible with other optimisation mods, Ultra Plus asks you not to add Engine.ini tweaks, and GSC itself lists "optimization changes by configs" among the first things to break after a patch. If you're short on frames, read our FPS settings guide first and reach for mods second.
- Optimized Tweaks S.2 by VynnGfx. The most downloaded mod for the game at 1.2 million: engine tweaks against stutter and latency without dropping image quality. Version 3.31 from 3 September, after 2.0.
- Ultra Plus. Engine tuning plus a lighting and colour fix, installed through its own UPM manager, with a Game Pass build. Version 6.4.2 from 31 August. The authors post new versions to UPM and Discord before Nexus.
- Dynamic Weather Overhaul. Reworked weather, darker nights, volumetric fog, rebuilt for 2.0. Doesn't mix with grEdit's weather or PanKotan's Clear Sky.
- PRZ: Photorealistic Zone. A big ReShade-based visual pack, version 2.4.5H for game 2.0.6. Not with DWO, and with Ultra Plus only in the ReShade-only install.
- PanKotan's forest and grass (More Realistic Forest and Grass pack): more conifers, closer to the real Zone, both rebuilt for 2.0.
What to skip: Stalker Optimizer hasn't been touched since November 2024, and the popular 2024 ReShade presets were tuned for the pre-2.0 look. They don't change game files, but nobody has really checked how they look on the new engine.
Weapon and ballistics mods

- OXA: Oxide's eXpanded Armory. Far more attachments and proper weapon customisation; the Prototype variant adds modular parts and its own repair system. 543,000 downloads, version 3.0.9 from 29 September.
- Better Ballistics Redux. A hardcore overhaul of gunplay, NPC accuracy by rank, mutants, meds and the economy. The author warns of "severely limited mod compatibility", which is why there's a lighter Better Ballistics Core built for 2.0. Doesn't mix with OXA Prototype.
- grEdit: Ballistics Redux. Real-calibre ballistics via bpatch, with a six-question installer. The author says "2.0.6 SAFE" and that it works on existing saves.
- Weapon Reposition Project changes how guns sit at the hip, and Iron Sight Overhaul adds tritium night sights for shooting in the dark. Both are updated for 2.0.6.
The well-known Maklane's Better Gunfights, which removed the long-range NPC "aimbot", stopped at a 1.7 version. Over 400,000 downloads, but I wouldn't run it on 2.0.
Carry weight and inventory mods

There's a trap here: the most popular weight mod, No (or reduced) weight for ammo, hasn't been updated since November 2024, and Rantanplan76's fork only reached 1.8. These work on 2.0:
- Long Days, Carry Wght, Rep Cost, Upg Cost: MODULAR. Carry weight, day length, repair and upgrade cost as separate modules, built with bpatch and tested on 2.0.
- z_weightmod. Just raises the limit; works on 2.0 on Steam, untested on Game Pass according to the author.
- quest item weight to 0 zeroes the weight of quest items, and Bigger Stack Size stacks ammo and consumables up to 32,767 without changing weight.
If you'd rather stay vanilla, the game has its own ways to raise the limit: suits, technician upgrades and artifacts. We'll cover those separately, along with what ammo actually weighs.
UI, quality of life and a livelier Zone

- Immersive HUD gives you a proper minimal HUD, and ShoCified UI reskins it Shadow of Chernobyl style. Both are 2.0-compatible.
- UpgradeAway: upgrades at any technician, no blueprints, with a respec. Also on the Workshop and mod.io.
- NPC Combat Overhaul: humans advance, suppress, flank and fall back. Beta 2.31 from 6 October.
- Shay's Living Zone or A-Life Uh.. Found A Way, but not both: each reworks how stalkers and mutants spawn so the Zone lives without you. The first leaves map markers behind on uninstall since 2.0.
- Axxii's Stealth Mod: harder for enemies to spot you depending on weather and stance; the 2.0 version landed on 9 September.
A-Life Extended, once on everyone's list, is stuck on game version 1.1, and Maklane's Better Zone on 1.7.1. If you want to know what a living Zone can realistically be and why it's so hard to build, we traced A-Life through the whole series.
Mods on console: yes on Xbox, no on PS5

Xbox Series X|S got mods with patch 1.5 through mod.io, right in the game menu. The catalogue is smaller than on PC and updates arrive later: per GSC on Discord, as reported by FRVR, the studio tests every Xbox mod itself first. Zone Kit Phase 2 raised the limits from 1 to 50 GB per mod and from 10 to 100 GB in total. After 2.0 GSC gives Xbox players the same advice as PC: start clean and add mods as they update. I couldn't confirm whether mods disable achievements on console.
PS5 has no mods. GSC promised mod.io support in 2025, but as of 8 October 2026 the game's mod.io page lists only Windows and Xbox, the 2.0 notes have Xbox lines and none for PlayStation, and we found no launch announcement. Third-party blogs saying "it's all live" aren't backed by any official source.
