God of War III Remastered, a game Sony never brought to PC, now runs on Windows without an emulator. Felipe Prado's fan port, gow3_pc, came out on October 10 and reached version 2.2.0 on October 14. The author says it is playable from start to finish and averages 144 frames per second at 1080p on a Radeon RX 6700 XT. No game files are included: you need a dump from your own PS4.

How it works

God of War III Remastered PC port features: up to 4K render and an in-game menu
God of War III Remastered

The PS4 uses the same x86-64 architecture as a PC, so the game's own executable runs directly on the processor. A runtime written for this game replaces the console's system libraries, and graphics go through the shadPS4 emulator's video core, which translates them to Vulkan, with God of War III fixes from developer cuesta4's branch. The project is a fork of Supermedo's Windows port, which in turn grew out of deadinside28's Linux Bloodborne port, covered in our native Bloodborne PC guide. In two weeks that one codebase has produced several ports like this.

  • Working. Cutscenes, menus, audio, saves and autosave, DualSense and Xbox controllers through SDL3, keyboard at the same time.
  • Patches. Render resolution from 480p to 4K, a 120 or 240 FPS engine rate, a broken texture fix, skippable videos.
  • In-game menu on Insert or R3 + L2: health and magic cheats, orb and damage multipliers, enemy health bars, an overlay with FPS and hardware load.
  • Shaders compile in the background, so the game does not freeze to build them.

Frame rate, and the catch

God of War III PC port FPS chart: 55 minimum, 144 average, 240 maximum

The chart shows the author's own numbers on a Ryzen 5 5600X and RX 6700 XT, not an independent test: 55 to 240 frames, 144 on average, at native 1080p with the 240 FPS engine rate. The main caveat is in the same README: at other render resolutions some textures look broken, and a fix is in progress. The port is labelled alpha, and by default it turns on 120 FPS, the texture fix and video skipping with the X button.

What you need to run it

God of War III Remastered port needs a 1.02 dump and Vulkan 1.3
God of War III Remastered

You need 64-bit Windows 10 version 1903 or newer, or Windows 11, a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 and a current driver, and a game folder containing eboot.bin, sce_module and sce_sys. The US (CUSA01623) and European (CUSA01715) versions with updates 1.00 and 1.02 are tested. Grab gow3-windows.zip from the releases page, extract it, run God of War III.exe and point it at the game folder. The executable is not signed, so Windows SmartScreen will warn you. A Linux build exists too, but it is still experimental.

Only download the port from the FelipePrado0/gow3_pc repository on GitHub. The hype has brought clones offering "free downloads" and torrents with the game supposedly bundled: the real port contains no game, and anything that claims otherwise is best avoided. There is no official PC version of the third game, and none has been announced: Sony brought the 2018 God of War and Ragnarok to PC, but never this PS4 remaster.
