The feeds have it that Neil Druckmann confirmed The Last of Us Part 3. We went to the source and the confirmation is not there. Something else is, and it is more interesting.
Here is what he actually said, what he did not say, and why he said it now.
What he actually said
This comes from an interview with The Washington Post published on 3 September 2026, a conversation about storytelling in games. Druckmann was asked about the future of the world now that the HBO series is coming to an end.
It's important for us to note that, as the creator of the games, Naughty Dog is still the steward of this IP, and even though this might be the end of this adaptation, we're not done with The Last of Us. There's a couple of projects in the works that, when the time is right, I'm very excited to talk about.
That is the whole quote the third game headlines are built on.
What he did not say
The words "The Last of Us Part 3" are not in it. Neither is the word "game", nor any hint of a format. There is "a couple of projects" and a promise to talk later.
Too many things fit that description to call the matter settled.
- A third game. The obvious reading, and the one outlets have gone with. There is still no confirmation of it.
- A spin-off. Naughty Dog has a template for this: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy from 2017, an expansion that grew into its own game.
- A revival of the cancelled online project. The Last of Us Online was shut down, but the work exists.
- Something that is not a game at all. A comic, another adaptation, anything. Druckmann was talking about the intellectual property, not the studio's release slate.
For fairness: back in April 2026 outlets already reported that a third game was in development and that Ellie would return. That was reporting from their own sources rather than a studio statement, and its status is exactly what it was then.
Why he said it now
The context explains the quote better than any guesswork.
Druckmann stepped down as co-showrunner of the HBO series, and writers Halley Gross and Bo Shim left with him. Craig Mazin stayed on as sole showrunner. Filming on the third season began in March 2026 in British Columbia and wraps in November, with a 2027 release expected. HBO has not formally called it the final season, but Druckmann's "the end of this adaptation" is not especially ambiguous.
So the man who is no longer part of the series is explaining that the rights stayed with the studio and that the world does not end with the show. That is a statement about control of the franchise, not a game announcement.
Druckmann himself is busy elsewhere: he is deep in production on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Naughty Dog's new big game, shown at The Game Awards in 2024 and still without a release date.
How to tell a confirmation from a tease
The test is simple and it works beyond this story. A confirmation contains a name and usually a platform or a window. A tease contains the words "projects", "when the time is right" and "I'm excited to talk about it".
This is the second kind, and that is fine. Naughty Dog genuinely is not done with The Last of Us, something genuinely is in the works, and one day they will say what. It is just that the distance between that and "Part 3 confirmed" takes a headline one day to cross and a development team several years.
Our position without any guessing: until a name is spoken, no specific game is a safe bet. When it is spoken we will write about it, and the headline will say "announced" rather than "confirmed".
