Capcom has announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold a million copies on its first day. The company also said the series as a whole has now passed ten million. For a game whose previous mainline entry came out twenty years ago, that is a result very few people expected.

What Capcom actually said
The statement went out on 7 September through the investor relations channel, so this is not a press release for the media but the company's own figure. The wording is that worldwide sales of Onimusha: Way of the Sword surpassed 1 million units on the first day, and that cumulative sales of the series have now surpassed 10 million units.
Then comes the part that makes the statement worth reading. Capcom writes that it is focusing on re-activating IPs that have not had a new title launch recently, and that it is working to further maximise corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content.
In plain terms: if Onimusha sells a million in a day after a twenty year pause, something else is coming out of the cupboard next. Capcom does not name what, and I am not going to guess. But that sentence about the library, in a note to investors, is worth more than any rumour.

How it landed
On Steam it has 8798 positive reviews out of 9959, which is 88 percent and the Very Positive badge. The European Steam price is 69.99 euro.
- Four platforms at once: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2. No timed exclusivity.
- The first mainline entry in twenty years. The previous one was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006.
- Rated eighteen and over according to the Steam page.
A small discrepancy I am not going to hide. Capcom gives the release date as 4 September, while the Steam page says 3 September. Most likely that is the time difference between Japan and Europe, but since the dates differ, here are both.

What it needs from your hardware
The requirements come from the Steam page, and they need reading carefully: both rows are quoted with an upscaler, not without one.
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| System | Windows 11 | Windows 11 |
| Processor | Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 3 3100 | Core i5-10400 or Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| Graphics | GeForce GTX 1660 6GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB | GeForce RTX 2060 Super 8GB or Radeon RX 6600 8GB |
| DirectX | 12 | 12 |
| Storage | 50 GB, SSD required | 50 GB, SSD required |
| What it targets | 1080p, low, 30 fps with upscaling | 1080p, medium, 60 fps with upscaling |
There is plenty to look at here. The minimum row promises thirty frames rather than sixty, and that is on low, at 1080p, with upscaling. The recommended row gets you to sixty, but again with upscaling and on medium. The game is built on the assumption that you will switch DLSS or FSR on, and Capcom says so plainly in the requirements themselves.
The upscalers are named: NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR 3.1, with a note that the frame estimates were made using DLSS 4.0 and FSR 3.1. What is new in DLSS 4.5 and how to turn ray reconstruction on we cover in a separate piece.
One pleasant detail: sixteen gigabytes of memory in both rows, and a GTX 1660 in the minimum. If you own a card of that class, have a look at our breakdown of what actually runs on a GTX 1650, the selection logic is the same.
