DLSS 5 on Radeon: the DLSS-NR on AMD mod hits 75 FPS, with a catch

DLSS-NR on AMD, the mod that runs DLSS 5 neural rendering on Radeon graphics cards, hit version 0.4.3 on 28 September under the name "The 75 FPS update". Its author, danielblnc, shows 75 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 on an RX 9070 XT at 1080p. On 3 September, the day of the first build, it was 10. That is 23 releases in 25 days, and the project now has almost two thousand stars on GitHub.

The 75 is real, but it was not measured the way "10 then 75" makes it sound. Here is what is behind it, how the mod got there, and what you need to try it yourself.

What is behind the 75 fps

With release 0.4.3 the author posted a screenshot of Cyberpunk 2077's built-in benchmark. This is what it shows:

SettingValue
Average fps75.19
Minimum and maximum69.20 and 81.47
Resolution1920x1080
UpscalerFSR 4, Performance
TexturesLow, custom preset

GPU and CPURadeon RX 9070 XT, Ryzen 9 3900X
DriverAdrenalin 26.9.1

The key line is FSR 4 in Performance mode. Since version 0.3.0 the mod runs the DLSS 5 network before the upscaler by default, on a smaller image, and FSR then scales it up to 1080p. In that same mode the author showed 71 fps on 12 September, though on the Ultra preset. So 10 and 75 cannot be compared: the first is without an upscaler, the second with one and with low textures.

The percentages in the release notes are about something else: the speed of the network itself. And there the progress is real.

How the mod grew: 23 releases in 25 days

Chart: on the first day the mod went from 10 to 30 fps at 1080p without upscaling

The first day was spent making the game playable at all: 10 fps in the first build, 23 in 0.2.0, 30 in 0.2.7, all at 1080p without upscaling. YouTuber Ancient Gameplays independently confirmed those 30 fps; early builds gave him 11-12 fps where the game ran at over 80 without the mod.

  • 0.3.0, 12 September. The network runs before FSR. 57 fps with FSR Quality, 71 with Performance; with path tracing, 37 and 50.
  • 0.3.3, 25 September. Plus 23 percent, an installer with a settings editor and new sliders for style, tone curve and exposure.
  • 0.4.0, the same day. Plus 42 percent. Together with 0.3.3 that is about 74 percent in one day.
  • 0.4.2, 27 September. Two modes: Fast, with cheaper arithmetic where the difference is barely visible, and Reference, with NVIDIA's exact math. RX 7000 cards run Reference only.
  • 0.4.3, 28 September. Plus 18 percent in Fast and 20 in Reference.
Chart: the mod's network got 2.76 times faster from version 0.3.1 to 0.4.3 according to the author

Multiply the gains in the release notes and the network is 2.76 times faster than in version 0.3.1 from 15 September. Those are the author's claims, not a benchmark, and the last two steps are in Fast mode. There is one independent check: according to TechPowerUp, Ancient Gameplays got about 50 fps in Cyberpunk at 3440x1440 on version 0.4.0, up from roughly 30 on earlier builds.

What you need to try it

  • Graphics card. Radeon RX 9000, tested on the 9070 XT, with the 9060 XT supported since 6 September. RX 7000 works, but only in the slower Reference mode: DLSS 5 is built on FP8, which RDNA 4 has and RDNA 3 does not. Older cards are not supported.
  • System and game. Windows 11, a DirectX 12 game with FSR 3 or FSR 4, Adrenalin 26.1.1 or newer. Vulkan is planned. Tested in Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA V Enhanced.
  • Your own DLSS 5 library. The mod contains no NVIDIA code; the author wrote the network runtime from scratch in HIP. You need nvngx_dlssnr.dll version 310.8.0.0 from a game that supports DLSS 5, such as NBA 2K27.
  • No anti-cheat. Games with anti-cheat will block the library, so single-player only.

Setup is simple: the installer and the library go into the game's exe folder, the installer does the rest, you turn on FSR in the game, and the End key opens the overlay. DLSS-NR on AMD already has neighbours: an AMD mode in DLSS 5 Manager and an OptiScaler build with DLSS NR for Radeon. More on those in our complete DLSS 5 guide.

What comes next

The author's goal is written into the project description: performance on par with an RTX 5070 Ti, which runs DLSS 5 officially. Going by the pace, new versions will keep arriving almost daily; the project has 166 open issues from testers.

AMD has not said a word about DLSS 5. There is only a rumour from 16 September that the company has its own neural lighting coming, most likely for RDNA 5. We found no official NVIDIA comment on the mod either. We are following the project and adding every notable release to the guide; our first story on the mod ran on 4 September, when it managed 10 fps.
