For Radeon RX 6000 owners this is the biggest driver in years. AMD Adrenalin 26.10.1, released on 20 October, brings the FSR 4.1 machine learning upscaler to every RDNA 2 card, desktop and laptop, from the RX 6900 series down to the RX 6400. This card generation was never part of the plan. When FSR 4 launched in March 2025, AMD's release notes said support was "exclusively on AMD Radeon RX 9070 Series graphics cards", and the upscaler was built around FP8 matrix maths that only RDNA 4 does in hardware. RDNA 2 from 2020 has no AI units at all. When AMD did promise the RX 6000 series an official version in May and June 2026, it named early 2027, and the driver arrived months before that.
The same release adds FSR 4.1 for Ryzen AI laptops and handhelds, support for three new games and twelve known issues, so read the list before you update. Both are below.
How to turn it on

- Install the driver. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 WHQL, released on 20 October for Windows 10 and 11.
- Enable the toggle. In AMD Software, open the Graphics tab and turn on "AMD FSR Upscaling". That unlocks FSR 4.1 in supported games.
- Pick it in the game. In the game's graphics or upscaler settings, choose AMD FSR Upscaling and the mode you want.
It only works in games that already support FSR 4 or the newer Redstone stack. AMD now counts over 400 games with at least one Redstone technology: upscaling, frame generation, Ray Regeneration or Radiance Caching. The full list with the catch for each card generation is in our FSR 4 games list.
What AMD promises: Performance beats 3.1 Quality

RDNA 2 has no dedicated AI hardware, so FSR 4.1 runs on the regular shader cores. That was the reason for the long wait, and AMD's Jack Huynh says the team didn't just port the model: "We didn't just bring it over, we made it better", tuning the model and the code path for the whole range. AMD's pitch is that FSR 4.1 in Performance mode looks sharper and cleaner in motion than FSR 3.1 in Quality mode, and still runs a little faster.
In AMD's test, an RX 6800 XT in Crimson Desert at 4K Ultra with frame generation on gets 95 FPS with FSR 3.1 Quality and 101 FPS with FSR 4.1 Performance. Keep in mind these are AMD's own numbers, both with frame generation, and comparing two different modes. Performance mode renders at a lower resolution than Quality, so the question that matters for RX 6000 owners is image quality, and only independent tests will answer it.
Laptops, handhelds and Xbox

- Ryzen AI Max ("Strix Halo" and "Gorgon Halo"): FSR 4.1 now, with the same driver.
- Ryzen AI 9 laptops (300 and 400 series): available now, on a new model AMD built for this class of chip that is less than half the size of the original INT8 model.
- Handhelds with Ryzen Z2 Extreme and Z2 A: same smaller model, but timing depends on each device maker. ASUS has confirmed it for the ROG Xbox Ally X. Steam Deck isn't mentioned.
- Xbox: starting on the Xbox Ally handheld and "coming soon" to Xbox Series X and S, no date yet. The next-generation Xbox, Project Helix, will use something AMD calls FSR "Diamond", with no details so far.
- Vulkan: FSR comes to Vulkan in FSR SDK 2.4 on GPUOpen "in the next couple of weeks", which matters for Vulkan games and for Linux.
What else is in 26.10.1, and who should wait

New game support covers Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, STAR WARS: Galactic Racer and FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE. The only listed fix is for Modern Warfare 4: the stutter on RX 6000 and newer cards is gone. The known issues are a longer read, and some of them decide whether you should update at all.
- RX 5000 and War Thunder: intermittent driver timeouts. AMD's own advice is to stay on Adrenalin 26.9.1.
- RX 7000: Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced can crash or time out, Valor Mortis can time out, and on the RX 7600 Valor Mortis can shut the whole system down.
- RX 9000: Death Stranding 2 can hang with FSR on, AMD says turn FSR off. Switching apps or overlays with in-game FSR frame generation can crash or freeze the system, the workaround is V-Sync on. Cyberpunk 2077 can crash with FSR, Anti-Lag and frame generation on while a video plays on a second screen.
- Any Radeon: opening or closing Xbox Game Bar and other overlays while AMD's Performance Metrics Overlay is on can crash a game. Turn the metrics overlay off first.
- Windows 10: Smart Access Memory may get switched off after the install. Check it after updating.
- Ryzen AI Max PRO 400: black screen at launch in Fallout 76 and system shutdowns in FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE.
One more catch for handhelds: AMD says the Adrenalin package from AMD.com doesn't support handheld gaming devices, so a ROG Xbox Ally X gets FSR 4.1 through an ASUS driver, not this one. If you need to go back to an older version, AMD recommends running its AMD Cleanup Utility first.
For RX 6000 owners this closes a story we have been following since September: AMD's answer to NVIDIA with Redstone left RDNA 2 waiting, and until now the only way to get FSR 4 on these cards was unofficial, through OptiScaler. With an official route, the swap is no longer needed in games that support FSR 4 directly.
