ANANTA is on the programme for Gamescom Opening Night Live on 25 August. It is an urban open world from the studio Naked Rain, published by NetEase Games. The game is free to play, and it is being developed in two places at once: Hangzhou and Montreal.

What it is

The project spent a long time under the working name Project Mugen, and the first clips earned it a reputation as the city-bound answer to big gacha role playing games. It is set in a living metropolis: business districts, back alleys, rooftops, traffic.

Movement is the core mechanic. Parkour across the city, driving, free climbing upward. You play as a range of characters and assemble your own crew.

Where it lands

The platform list is unusually broad: PC through its own launcher, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, plus iOS and Android. The same game is therefore meant to run on a phone, on a previous generation console and on PC.

That breadth is exactly what makes it interesting technically. An urban open world on PlayStation 5 is one thing, the same world on PlayStation 4 and on a phone is quite another. How the studio separated those versions in quality will show up in the first tests.

When

There is still no firm date. The marker cited most often is 2026, but nobody has confirmed it officially. The 25 August showing is exactly the sort of occasion where a date finally gets named.
