Bloodborne PC remaster: the mod Sony never made

On 10 September a modder called fromsoftserve pushed version 1.01 of BB PC Remaster to Nexus Mods. It is 18.9 gigabytes. It adds dynamic shadows to a game that never had them, doubles the resolution of most of its textures, and lights the street lamps of Yharnam that have stood dark since 2015.

Bloodborne has never been released on PC. There is still no port, no remaster, no announcement, nothing. What there is instead is an emulator and one person who has spent two years rebuilding the game by hand.

What the BB PC Remaster mod actually changes

The headline feature is shadows. Bloodborne shipped with most of its geometry casting nothing at all, which is normal for a 2015 console game and very visible once you know to look for it. The mod turns on dynamic shadowcasting across the whole game and rewrites the parameters that control how far those shadows reach and how stable they are.

  • Lights that were only decoration now emit light. Street lamps, wall lamps, candles and torches all had no illumination tied to them. They do now.
  • Textures upscaled two and four times over. Alongside them, new shininess maps built from the upscaled versions, so wet stone reads as wet stone instead of a flat grey smear.
  • Parallax occlusion mapping on a lot of surfaces. The author says this is still growing with each version, which is an honest thing to write on your own mod page.
  • Character work has started. Ludwig, the Cleric Beast and Father Gascoigne have higher resolution shininess maps, and Gehrman was edited specifically so he stops looking like he has been dipped in oil.
  • A ReShade preset comes with it. The new one adds ambient occlusion and global illumination through a community shader, plus temporal anti aliasing and sharpening.

There is a second download for people who want the geometry and lighting work without the enormous textures. Sensible, because the textures are what force you to hand the emulator thousands of megabytes of extra memory.

Why Bloodborne became a legend and then stayed on one console

Bloodborne came out in March 2015, made by FromSoftware with Sony Japan Studio, exclusive to the PlayStation 4. It took the Souls formula and threw away the shield. No hiding, no turtling, aggression rewarded with health you claw back by hitting things. Yharnam is still, eleven years later, the setting people bring up when they want to explain what atmosphere in a video game means.

It was also locked to 30 frames per second, on hardware that stopped being current in 2020.

That combination is the whole reason this article exists. Every other FromSoftware game of that era has been ported, patched or remastered. Dark Souls got a remaster. Demon's Souls got a full remake on PS5. Elden Ring runs on everything. Bloodborne, the one people ask about most, got nothing. It runs today exactly as it ran in 2015, and if your PS4 dies you go and buy another PS4.

In February 2021 Lance McDonald released a patch that unlocked the frame rate. It was not casual to use, you needed a jailbroken PS4, but it worked, and for four years it was the closest thing to an official fix that existed.

On 31 January 2025 Sony sent a takedown notice and McDonald removed the links.

Nearly four years of silence, then a legal notice, and still no remaster of their own. I understand the reasoning a company gives for this. I also think it is the single clearest explanation of why so many people are now happy to hand their evening to an emulator instead.

shadPS4 is an open source PlayStation 4 emulator that George Moralis started in October 2022. It now has more than 32 thousand stars on GitHub and commits landing daily. Bloodborne became its unofficial mascot almost immediately.

The pace in the summer of 2024 was ridiculous. On 5 July the game booted as far as the character creator, drowning under a red filter. By 19 August, version 0.2.1 could run both the retail and the alpha build without crashing, and some people were already reporting more than 60 frames. Rendering caught up in early September with occlusion, depth of field, dynamic lighting and shadows.

Then it got slow and unglamorous, the way these projects do. For most of 2025 the game was playable only if you installed mods to patch around graphical faults, the worst of which made character models explode into spikes of geometry. That was finally solved in July 2025 by an experimental feature in version 0.10.0. In January 2026 Digital Foundry measured it running up to 60 frames at 4K on an RTX 4080, with the caveat that going past 60 still causes glitches.

Two weeks after the game first became walkable, on 4 September 2024, fromsoftserve uploaded the first version of BB PC Remaster. The mod has been growing ever since, through 0.87 and 0.99 and all the small steps between, to the 1.01 that landed this week.

What it costs you to run

More than you might hope, and the author is upfront about it. The mod's own instructions ask you to switch on devkit console mode in shadPS4, raise the graphics heap sizes, and allocate roughly 5000 megabytes of extra memory to keep the high resolution textures from failing to render. Model detail goes to its highest setting. You pick a light grid patch that matches your monitor.

The frame rate question has a genuinely interesting answer. There is a 60 frame patch, and the author does not use it. His reasoning is that at 60 the input latency rises across the board even when the frame rate holds, while the original 30 frame cap has very low latency. He plays at 1440p and 30 frames by choice. Not everyone is sensitive to that, he adds, which is fair.

Bugs are still bugs. Old Yharnam has pillars that come out either too bright or too dark, and that is listed on the mod page as unsolved.

None of this is a substitute for Sony sitting down and porting the thing. It is one person with a texture upscaler and a lot of patience, working on an emulator that also had to be built from nothing. The numbers say people want it: 176 thousand downloads and 1402 endorsements on a mod for a game that does not officially exist on this platform.

The mod details come from the BB PC Remaster page on Nexus Mods, checked on 10 September 2026: author fromsoftserve, version 1.01 uploaded on 10 September 2026, the 18.9 gigabyte file size, the first upload on 4 September 2024, 1402 endorsements, 72302 unique and 176406 total downloads, and the full feature list including dynamic shadowcasting, the altered shadow range, the point lights added to lamps and candles, the upscaled textures and shininess maps, parallax occlusion mapping, the work on Ludwig, the Cleric Beast, Father Gascoigne and Gehrman, the ReShade preset, the original resolution alternative download, the recommended shadPS4 settings with 5000 megabytes of extra memory, the author's own reasoning about input latency at 30 against 60 frames, and the unsolved pillars in Old Yharnam. The emulator facts come from the shadPS4 repository and the project's Wikipedia entry: start of development in October 2022 by George Moralis, the star count on 10 September 2026, the 5 July 2024 boot with the red filter, version 0.2.1 on 19 August 2024, the rendering improvements of early September 2024, the vertex explosions fixed by readbacks in version 0.10.0 in July 2025, and the Digital Foundry measurement of up to 60 frames at 4K on an RTX 4080 in January 2026. Lance McDonald's 60 frame patch of 21 February 2021 and Sony's takedown notice of 31 January 2025 come from his own post and from press reports of that day. Bloodborne's March 2015 release on PlayStation 4 comes from its PlayStation Store page. The opinions about Sony's handling of the game are ours.
