There are 66 Warframes in the game, and almost any of them can be pushed to the point where it deletes everything. The new player's problem is not who is stronger in theory. It is that they have one free evening and three slots. Building the wrong frame is not a loss, it is a week spent waiting on the foundry.

So most of this guide is a breakdown by job: here are five things that get in your way, and here is who solves each one. If you came for a tier list, it comes right after the criteria.
How we picked
Honestly, up front: a list of the strongest is always an opinion, there is nothing to measure. But an opinion can have a stated criterion or none at all. Ours is three questions, and a frame has to pass all three.
- Does it work without investment. A frame that needs rare mods, four Forma and one specific weapon is strong on paper and useless a week into the game. Only frames that are useful the moment they finish building got in.
- Does it survive the transition. Plenty of frames are good up to Saturn and dead on the Steel Path. We wanted the ones that matter at both ends.
- How hard is it to reach. A frame sitting behind a long chain of quests and standing can be excellent, and recommending it to someone in their second week is still pointless.
The third point is worth unpacking, because it is not obvious. We counted, across our own guide, where the blueprints of all 66 frames actually come from, and the picture does not match the way forums describe it. The most common route is the Market and bosses, 22 frames. Quests give another 21. And the clan dojo, the thing people complain about most, covers just seven frames. The clan wall is real, but it stands in front of a tenth of the roster, not all of it.
Tier list: S, A and B
Most people who open this page came for a tier list, so here is one. It runs on the same three questions. S passes all three: useful the day it is built, still pulling its weight on the Steel Path, reachable in the first weeks. A is excellent with one catch. B carries you for a while or only works in the right hands.

Rhino sits in B, and we still tell a new player to start with him. The tier shows how far a frame carries you. Rhino gets you through the first twenty hours without a clan, and after that you build the next one. The sections below go by job, in the order you are likely to need them.
If you have just started: Rhino and Volt
What kills you in the first twenty hours is not a boss, it is ordinary enemies taking you down in three shots. Both of these frames fix exactly that, and both finish building in 36 hours instead of the usual 84.
- Rhino. Iron Skin absorbs a fixed amount of damage and Roar buffs the whole squad. He is twelve years old and still the first recommendation, because nothing replaced him: this is the simplest way to stop dying. The main blueprint is in the Market for credits, the components drop from Jackal on Fossa, Venus, one of the easiest bosses in the game.
- Volt. Speed buffs the squad, Shield doubles the damage of bullets fired through it, Discharge stuns a room. Of the three starters he stays useful the longest, and half the speedrun clips online are him. Blueprints come from the Tenno Lab in a clan dojo, so he is one of those seven cases where you do need a clan.
If you can only pick one, take Rhino: no clan needed and he forgives more.
If you keep dying: Revenant
There is a moment when the star chart is done, the Steel Path opens, and it turns out Iron Skin lasts about a second and a half there. Past that point you need a different class of frame.
Revenant cannot be killed by normal means. Mesmer Skin eats incoming hits one at a time regardless of how hard the enemy hit, and Danse Macabre sweeps the room with a beam. He is the frame people bring when they want to stop concentrating, and he is a little boring by design. He also turns the Steel Path from a test into a routine.
The main blueprint comes from the Mask of the Revenant quest, which unlocks at Rank 2 with The Quills, and the components drop from Plains of Eidolon bounties. A finished Prime set runs about 50 platinum on the market, one of the best buys in the game.
Worth naming alongside him: Wukong. Defy restores his health after a knockdown and his twin plays the mission next to him. He has been nerfed and he is still the most forgiving frame for solo play. Blueprints from the dojo.
If you farm resources: Nekros and Khora
This is the one pair on the list you will build not because you wanted to but because you have to. Warframe is a game about farming, and two frames make farming twice as fast.
- Nekros. Desecrate makes corpses drop loot a second time. It is the most used farming ability in the game and nothing else does its job. Components drop from Lephantis on Magnacidium, Deimos, which has three heads that each have to be finished off separately.
- Khora. Strangledome hangs a room in the air, Whipclaw kills what is hanging there, and the cat Venari fights beside you. The best farming frame there is. Components come from regular Sanctuary Onslaught, not Elite, and it takes a while.
Khora has one unpleasant detail worth knowing in advance: she needs 9 Kavat Genetic Code, and those only come from scanning feral Kavats in the Orokin Derelict. That is the bottleneck of the whole build, so start there rather than finish there.
If you need everything dead at once: Saryn and Mesa
Two frames that have been meta for so long people treat them as part of the interface.
- Saryn. Spores jump from corpse to corpse on their own and Miasma detonates whatever they have been eating. The classic answer to Sanctuary Onslaught and any map where everything has to die at once. Components drop from Kela De Thaym on Merrow, Sedna, and reaching her means going through Rathuum, a separate arena mode.
- Mesa. Peacemaker locks onto every head in the room and fires until the room is empty. One of the fastest killers in the game. Components drop from Mutalist Alad V on Eris, and getting there needs a key you have to build first.
Both are available without a clan, and both need work just to reach the boss. Budget an evening for that, not half an hour.
If you play in a squad: Wisp, Dante and Protea
The three that get thanked in squad chat. All are fine solo, and in a group their value doubles.
- Wisp. Her motes hand the squad health, speed and shock on a permanent basis, and she is invisible while airborne. Arguably the best support in the game, and almost nothing about her build can be a mistake. Every blueprint drops from the Ropalolyst on Jupiter.
- Dante. Tragedy erases a room that Dark Verse has marked, and Pageflight hands out overguard to everyone nearby. The best all-round support in years, though the combos take learning. Blueprints come from Rotation C of Disruption on Armatus, Deimos.
- Protea. Turrets, grenades and Temporal Anchor, which sends you back thirty seconds with the health and ammo you had there. One of the best all-rounders, and her Prime set is the cheapest on this list at around 40 platinum.

About price, separately. The Prime versions of these frames go for 40 to 95 platinum on the market, several times less than the 275 the shop asks for the regular version. The difference is what arrives: platinum in the shop buys a finished frame with a slot, while a market set is blueprints you still have to build. If platinum is short and time is not, the Prime set is the right purchase.
The single best value in the game did not even make the list: a Xaku Prime set costs around 25 platinum, and it is one of the strongest Steel Path frames going. It is out of the ten only because building it touches three open worlds and that is no place for a new player.
Who not to build first
These are not bad frames. They are frames that will disappoint if you take them too early.
- Inaros. An enormous health pool and no ceiling whatsoever. He will not let you die and he will not do anything else. Good as a first tank, bad as your only frame.
- Limbo. Unmatched on defence and the fastest way to annoy a squad that did not expect him. Take him once you know how to use him, not the other way round.
- Gyre. Very strong with the right weapon and nearly pointless without one. Weapon first, frame second.
- Grendel. Absurdly tanky, but his components are handed out for separate trials rather than for resources. The real price is the missions, and they are not a second-week job.
What you can actually build over a weekend
A useful detail few people know. Most frames take 84 hours: twelve for three components that sit in the foundry at the same time, then 72 for the frame. There are exceptions.
By the game's official export, exactly five frames finish in 36 hours: Excalibur, Mag, Rhino, Volt and Koumei. Their final build runs 24 hours instead of 72. All five except Koumei are starter frames, and that is not a coincidence: the game is shortening the wait for people who just arrived.
And a genuine curiosity: Limbo builds his components and himself in roughly a minute. His parts come out of a quest, and the game does not make you wait again afterwards.
What to do right now
The short version, in order.
- Rhino first. No clan, 36 hours, and he removes the main problem of the opening hours.
- Nekros second. Everything after this is farming, and with him it is twice as fast.
- Third one is taste. Saryn if you want to kill in bulk, Wisp if you play with friends, Revenant if the Steel Path is next.
- Farm Argon Crystals last. They decay 24 hours after you pick them up, and they are the one resource that can disappear while you are collecting the rest.
