Resident Evil Code: Veronica X with a plate: 25 PS3 games with native PC ports, 3 played to the end, no emulator

The PS3 was long the hardest console to bring to PC: RPCS3 needs a strong processor, and native ports did not exist. In October that changed. GitHub now has fan projects for 25 PS3 games that recompile the console's code into a Windows or Linux program. Three of them can already be finished: Resident Evil Code: Veronica X HD, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection with online play, and Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. Drakengard 3, Demon's Souls and Soulcalibur II HD are close behind. Every port needs your own copy of the game, and most also need its main executable decrypted. The full list as of November 1 is below, sorted by how far each port has got.

Where PS3 ports suddenly came from

Chart: GitHub stars of PS3 native PC ports, inFamous 392, God of War Ascension 365, Drakengard 3 227, Code Veronica X 184
PS3 ports on GitHub

Almost all of them run on ps3recomp, a set of tools and runtime libraries by sp00nznet. It translates the code for the PS3's main PowerPC core and its SPU coprocessors into C++, and replaces the console's system libraries and RSX graphics chip with native code on Direct3D 12, Vulkan or Metal. The Demon's Souls project dates back to June, but nearly all the others appeared in October, once ps3recomp had matured enough to build whole games. Many authors write that they built their port with AI assistants, so versions change every day and quality varies a lot.

On GitHub, the most watched are inFamous (392 stars), God of War: Ascension (365, across two competing projects) and Drakengard 3 (227). Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, the first to be finished end to end, has 184.

Played to the end: 3 games

Claire in Resident Evil Code: Veronica X with a plate: PS3 HD version on PC, finished start to end, up to 120 FPS with FSR 3.1
Resident Evil Code: Veronica X
  • Resident Evil Code: Veronica X HD. RE-Code-Veronica-PS3-HD-Recomp-PC 1.1.11 for Windows. The author completed the game on a Ryzen 5 5600X with an RX 6700 XT. It takes only the PSN version 01.00 (US, EU or Japan) plus its .rap file, and adds 60 FPS through animation interpolation, FSR 3.1 frame generation up to 120 FPS, a speedrun overlay and a launcher in 13 languages.
  • Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. T5DR Online 1.1.9. Offline, every mode works at 60 FPS, and online play with rollback runs through the launcher's own lobby with ranked matches, much like the Tekken 6 port. You need the US PSN release NPUB30009; the European one is offline only.
  • Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. RACiT 0.9.3 beta with a Vulkan renderer. Since version 0.8 the author says it is "fully playable from start to finish", though not finished as a port. It needs the US disc BCUS98124 and a decrypted EBOOT.

Playable, not yet finished: 9 games

A duel in Soulcalibur II HD Online with a plate: native PC port, fights at 60 FPS, Vulkan on Windows
Soulcalibur II HD Online
  • Drakengard 3. Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.5.0 alpha, a ready program for Windows, macOS and, experimentally, Linux. The author reports 60 FPS at 4K on an RTX 4090 with an i9-13900K, 55-65 FPS in the first chapter on a Steam Deck and 60 FPS at 1080p on an M1 Pro. All 20 DLC packs, HDR and trophies are supported; update 1.01 is required.
  • Demon's Souls. Two projects, both build from source. demons-souls-recomp by timboat writes that "the entire game seems playable" at 60 FPS, while the author is still mid-playthrough. Its first release, on November 3, is a setup kit rather than a ready game: tools, patches and build scripts that the author ran on a clean Windows install from start to "All done". DemonsSoulsRecomp published its first release, 0.1.0, on November 4. DemonsSoulsRecomp plays from the start through the Boletarian Palace and Stonefang Tunnel and adds ultrawide, HDR and up to 240 FPS. Neither has online play; the US disc BLUS30443 is needed.
  • Soulcalibur II HD Online. Soulcalibur2HD-recomp 0.3.0 works on Windows (Vulkan) and Apple Silicon Macs, with fights at 60 FPS even on Intel Arc integrated graphics. Online play is not available.
  • inFamous. inFAMOUSreborn 1.1, the most starred PS3 port. Its installer builds the game from the European disc BCES00220 and adds DLSS, FSR 3.1 and 4 with frame generation if you supply the SDKs. The author doesn't say how far it can be played.
  • Armored Core 4. AC4-Port 0.6.0: the whole game runs as a 64-bit Windows program, from 30 FPS to unlocked at the same game speed, with full mouse control in the garage too.
  • Tony Hawk's Project 8. Project 8 Plus 0.9.2, an early release from the US PS3 disc, with HD textures, uncapped frame rate, ultrawide, Lua mods and a level editor.
  • Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD. Yakumo 0.7.5 for Windows, Linux, macOS and Android takes the PS3 HD release, although strictly it recompiles the PSP game inside it. Hunts, saves and local multiplayer work; some curved surfaces are missing.
  • The Simpsons Arcade Game and Guitar Hero III. Both are from sp00nznet, the author of ps3recomp, and both are source only. The Simpsons Arcade Game plays at 35-57 FPS with online co-op. In Guitar Hero III the game's own bot cleared all 45 Quickplay songs, but there is no career mode or guitar support yet.

Early ports: 9 games, and 4 that don't play yet

Chart: God of War Ascension PC port in chapter 16, about 68 FPS on Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 32 on Core i5-11400F, 8 on a Core i5-10300H laptop
God of War: Ascension

The chart shows the main problem with PS3 ports: they lean heavily on the processor. The God of War: Ascension port by otavix010 runs chapter 16 at about 68 FPS uncapped on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and about 32 on a Core i5-11400F, while a four-core laptop without AVX-512 manages around 8.

  • God of War: Ascension. Two projects. gow-ascension-pc by otavix010 installs through its own launcher, which downloads update 1.04 and the firmware from Sony. Chapters 1 and 16 work, the rest is unchecked. The arnaldolima1 version reaches the first boss at 22-27 FPS on a Ryzen 5 5600G and has no release yet.
  • God of War II HD. Gow2HD-Windows 0.1.0 builds the PSN version on Windows in about ten minutes and has been tested in the Rhodes levels. It is based on a port for Apple Silicon Macs that runs at 45-60 FPS.
  • Killzone 3 and Killzone 2. Project Helghast 0.1.7 loads all nine chapters of Killzone 3 at 16-23 FPS, with split-screen co-op. Project Pyrrhus 0.1.6 gets through the first level of Killzone 2 at about 23 FPS.
  • Haze. Haze Recomp 0.1.13 has a proper installer and invite-code co-op, and averaged 47-73 FPS at 1440p on an RTX 5080. The full campaign hasn't been checked.
  • inFAMOUS 2, Yakuza: Dead Souls, White Knight Chronicles II. infamous2-pc plays from Empire City into New Marais but runs on Linux only. Yakuza: Dead Souls gets through the opening at 20-30 FPS. White Knight Chronicles II reaches the first town of the first game on the same disc. All three are source only.
  • MotorStorm. motorstorm-ps3 races at about 30 FPS, but only on Mac and iPhone.

Four more ports don't play yet. Twisted Metal (2012) starts a match, but the world isn't drawn. flOw gets stuck before the game starts. The PS3 HD Shadow of the Colossus opens a window but draws nothing, and Tokyo Jungle boots with sound but no picture. All four are by sp00nznet, who uses them to test ps3recomp itself.

What a PS3 port needs

A fight in Soulcalibur II HD Online with a plate: what a PS3 port needs, your own copy, a decrypted EBOOT, a CPU with AVX2
Soulcalibur II HD Online

PS3 ports ask for more than PS2 ones. First, a copy of the game in the exact release the README names: the disc serial (BLUS, BCUS, BCES) or, for PSN games, the package and its .rap licence file. Second, the game's main executable, EBOOT, has to be decrypted. Most authors suggest RPCS3 for that: install the official PS3 firmware in it and decrypt the file with Utilities, Decrypt PS3 Binaries. Some ports also want a particular update, such as 1.01 for Drakengard 3, 1.04 for God of War: Ascension or 1.14 for Killzone 3.

Third, a processor with AVX2, and ideally AVX-512, plus 16 GB of RAM if the game is built on your PC. Only a few ports, such as Code Veronica X and Drakengard 3, come as a ready program. The rest install Visual Studio's build tools and compile the game, which takes from a few minutes to half an hour. As with the PS2, a ready program contains the game's translated code, so we link only to the repositories. The same story on the PS2 is in our list of PS2 ports, and ports from other consoles are in our recompilation list.
