4A Games is releasing a free update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux. It arrives on PC on October 22 and on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 29, with Japanese console players getting it in November. The studio named the reason itself: the Metro series has sold 50 million copies. And it made clear right away that this is not a remaster or a remake: the look and gameplay of Redux stay the same, and the update brings the games up to date for modern hardware.
What changes on every platform

- 4K textures. Support comes everywhere, on PC and on consoles.
- Animation, audio and environments. The studio promises more detailed animation, higher-quality audio and more environmental detail.
- Community fixes. The update includes bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements players have been asking for for years.
4A Games says the full patch notes will be published on launch day, so for now this is a list of what is definitely coming, without the details.
What PC gets

The PC list is shorter, but the main thing is there: DLSS support, spatial audio and "frequently asked for improvements" along with the community fixes. The studio did not say which version of DLSS or whether frame generation is included. Both games came out in 2014 on the 4A Engine, and an upscaler will make life noticeably easier for owners of 4K monitors.
What PS5 and Xbox Series X|S get

- Native versions. PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S get their own builds instead of backward compatibility.
- Frame rate and resolution. True 4K at 60 fps, or upscaled 4K at 120 fps if your TV or monitor supports it.
- Upscalers. PSSR on PS5 Pro, TSR on Xbox Series X.
- Visuals. Better lighting, shadows and particle effects, plus hardware tessellation and displacement at runtime.
- Controllers and more. DualSense adaptive triggers and Xbox impulse triggers, spatial audio on Xbox, power saving modes, and support for Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox handhelds.
Why buy now for 1.99
The update is free for every owner of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux on Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. And the Steam Autumn Sale is on right now, with both games at 1.99 dollars, 90 percent off. Metro Exodus is 2.99, Metro Awakening 9.89. The discounts run until October 8, so you can buy before the update arrives, and on October 22 it will simply download.
All of this is a warm-up for Metro 2039, which comes out on February 4, 2027. The studio openly invites players back into the tunnels, for example to play differently and see another ending through the karma system.
