Physint moves to Xbox after PlayStation cancelled it

Hideo Kojima announced Physint on a PlayStation State of Play in January 2024, standing next to the head of PlayStation Studios, calling it the culmination of his career. On 10 September 2026 Kojima Productions announced that Physint will be published by Xbox.

The part that makes this more than a logo swap is what Kojima wrote afterwards. PlayStation did not let the game go. PlayStation cancelled it.

What Kojima actually said

He posted the full account himself, and it is short enough to read in one go.

As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again.

Two words in there are doing a lot of work. "Unexpectedly", which tells you the studio was not part of the decision. And "once again", which points at OD, the horror project Kojima Productions has been making with Xbox since 2023. The two companies were already working together while this was happening.

No reason for the cancellation was given publicly. Not by Sony, not by Kojima Productions.

What Physint was supposed to be

An action espionage game, which is the phrase Kojima uses when he means a Metal Gear that he is allowed to own. The name is physical and interactive squashed together, and the pitch from the 2024 announcement was that it should feel like playing a film, with a cast and a look built for that.

He also said something at the time that reads differently now. In 2027 he will have been making games for forty years, and he wanted Physint to be the game he leaves behind, something people could still play after he stops working. That is the project PlayStation Studios cancelled in June.

Development is continuing. Kojima's post says so plainly, and the studio has been on this for at least two years already.

What it means for platforms, and for PC

Nothing about platforms has been confirmed beyond the publisher change, so here is what can honestly be said and what cannot.

  • It will not be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. That much follows from Sony no longer publishing it.
  • Day one on PC is unlikely. The project is at least two years into development under a different publisher's plan, and platform lists do not usually move that late without the schedule moving too.
  • Xbox publishing does not automatically mean Xbox only. Microsoft has spent the last two years putting its games in more places, not fewer.

Everything past that is guessing, and I would rather not pretend otherwise while there is a real timeline to look at.

Mid June 2026 is also roughly when it emerged that PlayStation was moving back towards PS5 exclusives. Whether the two things are connected nobody has said, and I am not going to claim they are. It is worth putting next to each other though, because a publisher tightening up around exclusives and a publisher cancelling a game whose director has been open about wanting it played everywhere is at least a plausible clash.

The other thing worth sitting with: Kojima Productions spent three months quietly looking for a new home while the project was already dead on paper. Three months of a studio in limbo, and the first most people heard of it was the announcement that it had been saved.

Sony announced this game on its own stage with its own studio boss standing next to Kojima. Then it cancelled it without a word of explanation, and Xbox picked it up. Whatever the internal reasoning was, that is a bad look, and it will follow the next State of Play around for a while.

Sources

The announcement that Xbox will publish Physint comes from the Kojima Productions site on 10 September 2026. The quoted statement is Hideo Kojima's own post, reproduced in full by TechPowerUp on the same day, which is also the source for the mid June 2026 cancellation by PlayStation Studios, the absence of any public reason, the three month search for a new partner, the note that the game will at least not be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, the reading that day one PC availability is unlikely given the project is at least two years into development, and the observation that mid June is also when PlayStation was reported to be moving back towards PS5 exclusives. The 31 January 2024 State of Play announcement with Sony, the action espionage description and Kojima calling the project the culmination of his work ahead of forty years in the industry in 2027 come from that announcement and from the Wikipedia entry that collects it. The comments on the wording of Kojima's statement and the closing opinion are ours. No footage or screenshots of Physint have been released, so the images in this article are from Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, another Kojima Productions game, and the official Physint title card.
