Stalker 2 update 2.1, called The Zone Lookout, is out, and its headline feature is a setting rather than content: you can now push out the distance at which the game shows A-Life NPCs. GSC Game World rebuilt the binoculars, gunfire audio and anomaly rendering around it, added fast travel through squad leaders, and then spent most of the 164-item changelog fixing bugs.

A-Life distance, binoculars and squad-leader travel

The patch landed on October 26 as the first major update since 2.0 and the Cost of Hope expansion. GSC's highlights section is only four lines long:
- A-Life visualisation distance. A new option raises how far away simulated NPCs and mutants are shown. Elsewhere in the notes it goes by "streaming distance". GSC gives no figure in metres.
- Binoculars. Updated for the new distances, and with the higher setting they identify targets further out.
- Fast travel with squad leaders. A new way to get around on top of the paid guides.
- Anomalies. They now draw further away with the streaming setting, react differently to dead bodies, and the arch-anomaly at the CNPP looks different.
Gunfights carry further too, since the audible range now follows the same setting. That is the change I expect people to notice first. Hearing a firefight two hills away does more for the Zone than another mutant model ever could.
What it costs is another matter. GSC published no performance numbers, and A-Life runs on the CPU, so if your processor already struggles in Rostok, raise the slider one notch at a time and watch the frame time.
164 items: what got fixed

We counted the notes by section: 107 items are bugs and performance, 33 are quests and levels, 14 are AI and combat. The ones most players will feel:
- Seven quests that would not start now do: The Destructive Power of the Mind, The Road to the Center of the Storm, Shadows of the Past, To the Origins of Freedom, Territorial War, Distant Mirage and In the Heart of the Iron Forest. The expansion's opening missions were fixed as well.
- PS5: 16 fixes, nearly all for characters that went missing after 2.0, from Varan to Scar and his squad.
- Performance: the Faraday anomaly no longer renders on the GPU while inactive, a memory leak from lots of map markers is gone, and two story missions lost their frame drops.
- AI: no more crowds of NPCs and mutants spawning in Rostok, fewer mercenaries piling up at the Duga, and enemies now shoot back even when you are not looking at them.
- Handhelds and streaming: gamepad input fixed on portable consoles and Steam Machine, DLC applied on first launch in SteamOS, and GeForce NOW players can start the DLC again.
If you play with AMD frame generation, the Margach D-12MT reticle no longer breaks with FSR Frame Generation on, and several blurry scope textures were fixed.
If the game crashes after 2.1

GSC says it plainly: mods may not survive the update. If you get crashes or stutter after patching, turn every mod off and test without them, then go to support.stalker2.com if the problem stays. There is no sign you need to touch your saves; several fixes are actually about loading them, like corpses no longer shifting position and Zulu's armour no longer floating in mid-air.
Mods that change simulation distance now overlap with the official setting, so those are the first ones I would remove.
