RTX Remix 1.6 hands DLSS 5 to modders, and Radeon cards get 20% faster in it too

NVIDIA released RTX Remix 1.6 on October 23, and DLSS 5 is in it. Until now the neural rendering from NBA 2K27 was something only NVIDIA and game studios could switch on. Now modders get it too: people who build remasters of old games can enable it in their projects and tune how it relights scenes and redraws materials. The update also adds up to 6x frame generation, a beta of RTX Remix for Minecraft Java and, a little ironically for an NVIDIA tool, roughly 20% more speed on AMD graphics cards.

One thing first. Your old games will not pick up DLSS 5 on their own. Remix only works where a remaster built on it already exists or the game is compatible with it, and that remaster's author has to ship an update. What DLSS 5 is and where it runs today is all in our DLSS 5 guide.

What remaster makers get

DLSS 5 sits both in the runtime, the part of Remix that runs inside the game, and in the Toolkit, where a modder puts the remaster together. From the release notes:

  • Model A, B or C, picked once for the whole remaster in the render settings.
  • Separate controls for highlights and volumetric light, adjustable live while the game runs.
  • Per-material masks, so the effect strength can differ between materials instead of one slider for the whole frame.
  • Preset C for Frame Generation (the faster mode NVIDIA put into the NVIDIA app beta on October 13) plus 5x and 6x multipliers on cards that support them.

I think the masks matter most. The loudest complaint about DLSS 5 since the March reveal has been that it repaints faces its own way, and a remaster author now has a tool to rein that in. NVIDIA demonstrates all of it on Fallout 4 from its October 13 preview; the comparison above comes from the release notes. DLSS 5 itself still needs an RTX 50 card, an RTX Spark laptop or GeForce NOW. RTX 40 support is promised with no date. Remix 1.6 also raises the minimum driver to 616.92 and drops the old CNN DLSS presets.

Why Radeon got faster

Ray tracing in Remix runs on Radeon too, DLSS aside. Version 1.6 switches AMD's Windows drivers to TraceRay mode by default instead of Inline, matching what Linux with the RADV driver already did. The change came from a community contributor, KingVulpes, who says AMD hardware copes worse with inline ray tracing than with the pipeline path. NVIDIA's notes put the gain at about 20%, 53 to 63 FPS on driver 26.6.4. Neither the game nor the card is named, so treat it as a single data point rather than a benchmark.

If what you want is DLSS 5 on a Radeon, that is still enthusiast mods only; AMD has said nothing official about DLSS 5. Which builds exist and what they cost in frames is covered in the guide.

Minecraft, ARM and the rest of the update

Minecraft

Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 gets a Fabric mod that renders the game through Remix with path tracing. NVIDIA ships a PBR texture pack and a demo map made with the Blockworks team alongside it, and the mod's source is on GitHub. It is a beta, and Wccftech notes it does not get along with other mods very well yet.

The rest, briefly. Remix now runs on Windows on ARM, aimed at RTX Spark laptops, with Portal with RTX, the Half-Life 2 RTX demo and the Minecraft beta working there from day one. The old AI texture tools are replaced by ComfyUI 2.0. There is also sparse rendering: fewer rays per pixel, with Ray Reconstruction filling the gaps, and the modder sets where to land between speed and quality. Remix 1.6 is on NVIDIA's GitHub releases page as build remix-1.6.1.
