Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition now has a fan-made PC port that runs without an emulator. XCX Recomp went up on GitHub on the evening of October 31, and in the next ten hours its author shipped nine versions, 0.1.3 through 0.1.11. The game runs on Windows as a normal program at 60 frames per second by default, twice the Switch frame rate. By November 1 the repository had a hundred stars.

What already works

This is a static recompilation: the Switch game's code is translated into regular x86-64 code, and the graphics are drawn by the project's own Vulkan renderer. The author is upfront that it is early. New Game, cutscenes and gameplay already run with sound, text and menus. You can set the frame rate anywhere from 30 to 360, though anything above 60 is still experimental. Cutscenes stay at 30, as on the console, so subtitles and lip sync line up, and combat speed and timing, Soul Challenges included, hold steady at higher frame rates.

F1 opens the settings menu and F10 a performance overlay, and you can play on keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. Version 0.1.11 fixes startup crashes and flickering textures on Radeon RX 5000 and RX 6000 cards, prebuilds graphics pipelines from earlier sessions to cut stutter, and adds a first Linux build. Nobody has tried that one on real Linux hardware or a Steam Deck yet, and the author is asking for reports.

What you need to run it

  • your own copy of the Switch game: the base game and the 2.0.0 update, the add-on optional, plus the prod.keys file from your console;
  • Windows 10 or 11 and a CPU with AVX2;
  • a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 and the VK_EXT_external_memory_host extension;
  • 36 GB free while it builds, about 20 GB once it is done.

The XCX-Setup installer builds the game from your files once, on your own PC, and from then on you launch xcx.exe. New versions install over the old one and keep your saves and settings. The download contains no game files, and the author asks people not to share the built result. The author also says most of the code was written by AI coding agents under their direction, and that every build gets played before it ships.

Steam Deck support, emulator mods, ultrawide and VRR are on the roadmap. XCX Recomp is a fork of the Tears of the Kingdom recompilation by Valiantsin Dzerakh, and the other Switch games that already run natively on PC are in our recomp list and our Switch roundup.
