Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgment never came to PC, and now all three run on Windows without an emulator. They live in a single launcher, COGBox, which a developer going by Shagg opened on October 27 and pushed to version 0.3.5 by October 31. The repository already has 324 stars. The first game is left out on purpose: it already has several official PC versions, Reloaded from 2025 among them. Put together, that means the whole classic Gears quartet is now on PC.
How far you can play

According to the README, the games are fully playable with a few hiccups. Gears 2 has been tested through every chapter, while Gears 3 and Judgment are marked playable. Testing so far is the developer's own RTX 3080 Ti PC plus scripted runs through the chapters; other hardware is untested, and reports are welcome.
Under the hood it is a static recompilation: the Xbox 360 code is translated to C++ ahead of time, and a custom renderer draws every frame on Direct3D 12, with Vulkan as an experimental option. That brings things an emulator struggles with: resolutions up to 5K or a fast 1080p mode for weaker cards, SMAA, DLSS, FSR and XeSS, no 30 FPS cap, NVIDIA Reflex and AMD Anti-Lag 2, HDR10, 21:9 ultrawide, a field of view slider and switches for motion blur and depth of field. FSR frame generation is in too, but the developer calls it highly experimental. Shaders are translated and cached on disk and pipelines are built in the background, so new areas no longer freeze the game.
What you need

- your own copy: a disc image (.iso), a Games on Demand copy from your console, or a folder with the disc's files;
- the latest title update: Title Update 6 for Gears 2 and 3, and Title Update 4 is required for Judgment;
- Windows 10 or 11, a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell, AMD Ryzen or newer) and a DirectX 12 graphics card;
- 8 to 16 GB of space per game if the launcher unpacks the image for you.
Drop a file on COGBox and it recognises the game, checks the release and unpacks it next to itself. The launcher speaks 11 languages and supports split-screen in Gears 2, keyboard and mouse, Xbox and PlayStation controllers, DLC from your console and mods. Steam Deck and Linux work through Proton, again untested on real hardware. The download contains no game files, and the developer asks people not to post any in issues.
Before COGBox, Gears 2 and Judgment had separate early recomps, which are listed in our recomp list. How the series grew from game to game is in our Gears of War history.
