Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the 2008 Wii fighter Nintendo never released anywhere else, now runs on Windows and Linux without an emulator. Brawl Recompiled, a fan project on GitHub, statically recompiles the game's PowerPC code, main.dol and all 126 modules, into C++ with the WiiCompiled toolchain, so the game runs as a regular program. The first build appeared on 22 October, version 0.5.3 arrived on 31 October, and the releases have been downloaded about 7,600 times so far.
What already works

The port boots, loads saves, opens every menu tested so far and plays VS matches, the attract demos and the start of Classic mode. The Subspace Emissary works up to its opening cutscenes and first battle, the rest of the adventure is not confirmed yet. The project calls itself a work in progress, so expect gaps.
The picture already goes well past the Wii: render resolution up to 8x, which means 4K and above, the game's own 16:9 and a fill-window mode for ultrawide screens up to 32:9 with menus and HUD kept in proportion. Frame interpolation to 120 FPS is on by default, 180 and 240 are optional, while the game itself still runs at 60. There are save states in three slots, 2x to 4x fast-forward, Gecko cheats and an options menu inside the game on F10.
Mods, online and what you need

Mods load the way they do on a Wii, from a virtual SD card. The author has tried Project+ 3.2.1, Project+Ex 1.7, Super Smash REX with its 100-plus fighters, Brawl Minus and Legacy XP, all with their own characters and stages. Online play lets two to four Brawl Recompiled players join a room by a five-letter code. It runs in lockstep, so everyone needs the same build, and it does not connect to Dolphin netplay.
To play you need Windows (there is a separate build for processors without AVX2), Linux or a Steam Deck, and your own copy of the game as a disc image (.iso, .ciso, .wbfs) or an extracted folder; the project is built around the US release, RSBE01. No game files are included. As with every Nintendo fan port, such projects can disappear from GitHub at any moment, so download only from the project's own page. Other recompiled console games are in our full list.
