The PS5 Version of GTA 5 Now Runs on PC in the KytyPS5 Emulator

An open source PlayStation 5 emulator called KytyPS5 has reached the point where the console version of GTA 5 boots on an ordinary PC and holds 60 frames in places. It holds them for minutes, then falls over. Back in July the same emulator only reached the menus, and a month before that it was stuck on the splash screen.

What was actually shown

The clip went around over the weekend. GTA 5 runs the prologue in snowy North Yankton at forty to sixty frames depending on the scene. The hardware in the demo is not modest: a Ryzen 9 9950X3D with a Radeon RX 7900 XT. The game plays right up to the police encounter, where the emulator crashes.

One caveat up front, because it matters. Those numbers are not our measurement, and they are not the emulator team measurement either. They are what is visible in somebody else's clip and what TechPowerUp wrote up. We cannot verify them and we are not going to dress them up as a benchmark.

Besides GTA 5, several other console games have been shown running at sixty frames on the same emulator. So this is not one lucky title.

What the project is

KytyPS5 is an open source PlayStation 5 emulator written in C++, grown out of a heavily modified version of Kyty by InoriRus. The licence is GPL 2.0 and the repository was created on 9 June 2026.

  • Windows, Linux and macOS. Windows is the primary platform and gets the most testing. The macOS build is compiled for x86-64 and runs on Apple Silicon under Rosetta 2, with Vulkan supplied by MoltenVK.
  • 1979 stars and 188 forks on the morning of 7 September. For a three month old project that is a lot.
  • Builds land several times a day. On 7 September alone there were three: at 08:34, 08:47 and 09:19 UTC.
  • The project ships no games and no system software. The README says in its own block that it is not affiliated with Sony and that you should only use files you obtained legally.

The compatibility list is community run and lives on a separate project page. It also shows that 2D games boot far more readily than 3D ones, and that Unreal Engine 4 and 5 and Unity map onto the emulator best.

What it cannot do yet

The developers ask people not to bury them in bug reports and describe the state of the project without any polish: expect crashes, graphical glitches, low compatibility and poor performance. That is exactly what the GTA 5 video shows, except a few playable minutes happen before the crash.

The other major PS5 project, SharpEmu, is taking the opposite road. It builds accurate low level foundations first and only then goes after individual games. Duller to watch, and in emulation that usually pays off.

What interests me here is not a way to play. Playing GTA 5 through a PS5 emulator when the native PC version sits in Steam makes no sense at all. The interesting part is different: for five years the PS5 was treated as a closed box, and this project got to playable minutes in a big game in three months.

No, this will not run GTA 6

The question comes up in every thread, so here is the answer. The distance between a few minutes of a 2013 prologue on top end hardware and actually playing GTA 6 is enormous, and no development pace closes it on its own.

GTA 6 arrives on 19 November 2026 on consoles, and Rockstar has not announced a PC version at all. What is known today we went through in a separate piece about the PC version. The short version: you will be waiting, and waiting officially.

There is a second obstacle, a purely technical one. An emulator needs the game files, and GTA 6 is not shipping on a disc. Nobody has explained how to get around a digital only release.
