Final Fantasy VII Revelation is getting a boxed edition, and it already carries a warning: to play it you will need an internet connection and a download. In this arrangement the disc or the card is not the game, it is a pass to it.
An internet connection is required to download additional game data in order to play the physical version of the game.

On Switch 2 the card is just a key
Here it is spelled out. The Switch 2 game card does not hold the game: you put it in the console and download all 130 gigabytes. That is more than half of the console's built in 256 gigabytes, so a single game eats half the storage of a new Switch.
What sits in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series boxes has not been explained yet. Two options are open: part of the game on the disc plus a top up download, or the disc as a key exactly like on Switch 2. The file sizes for those versions have not been given either.

What else is known about the game
- It ships on 8 April 2027, a date director Naoki Hamaguchi gave on Sony's State of Play.
- Every platform on the same day: PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X and S, PC. A first for the series, where versions used to be months or years apart.
- 69.99 euro on Steam, published by Square Enix, protected by Denuvo. System requirements are still a placeholder on the page.

This is not a one off any more
In the autumn of 2026 a box with no game inside it is turning into the norm, and Square Enix is not the first through the door.
Rockstar puts a download code in the GTA 6 box instead of a disc and explains it as insurance against leaks. CD Projekt has promised a Witcher 4 box even without discs so that people are left with an object on the shelf. Sony has a running row over dropping discs, and its latest State of Play chat was flooded with protests again.
The practical takeaway is simple. A box on the shelf no longer means the game will start without a network in ten years. If that is what you are buying, look past the existence of a physical edition and read the small print on the back.
