About half of the Cyberpunk 2 quest team started out making mods. Paweł Sasko, associate director on the sequel, said so in the REDstreams episode about Update 2.5: CD Projekt RED has hired a lot of people who used to mod The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. He mentioned it in passing while explaining why Cyberpunk 2077 now lets you install mods straight from the game menu, consoles included.
What Sasko said

As transcribed by VGC: "For the project we actually hired so many modders, right? I would say at this point, I think half of the quest team is all former modders. They were all modders before, on the Witcher 3, Witcher 2, you know, and we hired them." To Sasko, modding is a "foot in the door": a way to see from the inside how games are built and then show your work in a job interview.
It's a rough figure, and he hedges it himself with "I would say". CD Projekt RED hasn't said how big the team is or how many quest designers it has, so "half" could mean fifteen people or fifty. For a studio whose whole reputation rests on quests, it's still a telling share.
Mods in Cyberpunk 2077 2.5: what changed for players

- Where: mods from the mod.io catalogue work on PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with more being added over time.
- How: from the game menu, with each mod switched on or off by a toggle, no manual file copying.
- The console catch: achievements and trophies are disabled on modded saves, and those saves get their own icon.
Sasko calls it a buffet: you walk in and take what you like, story mods, gameplay mods, cosmetics. "If you played Cyberpunk for 800 hours... or, you know, maybe a little less, but I hope not", this is how you find something you haven't seen yet. The full list of 2.5 changes, from dual-wielding pistols to FSR 4.1, is in our Update 2.5 story.
If you make mods yourself and wonder about a job in games, the takeaway from this episode is simple: at CD Projekt RED a modding portfolio works as a CV, and that's coming from the person building the team for the next Cyberpunk.
