Sir Daniel Fortesque in the MediEvil PS4 remake, now on PC through a fan port: version 1.3.5, render up to 4K, experimental 240 FPS cap

MediEvil, the 2019 PS4 remake of Sir Daniel Fortesque's 1998 adventure, never came to PC. Now it runs on Windows without an emulator. The fan port by bc160201983 appeared on GitHub on October 12, went through ten releases in a week and reached version 1.3.5 on October 19. On October 21 DSOGaming wrote that the game can be played from start to finish. No game files are included: you need a dump of your own PS4 copy.

What works

MediEvil PC port: 60 FPS by default, 90 to 120 FPS on an RTX 5080, five graphics presets
MediEvil

The port is built on the God of War III Remastered port, which in turn grew out of the Bloodborne projects. The game's own x86-64 code runs straight on your processor, a small runtime stands in for the PS4 system libraries, and the graphics go through the shadPS4 video core to Vulkan. According to the README, this is what works today:

  • The whole game loop. Intro videos, menus, levels, sound, saving and loading, with a save backup made before every start.
  • Intel and AMD processors. The game uses a few AMD-only instructions, and the port swaps them for ordinary ones on Intel chips.
  • Frame rate. 60 FPS by default. 120 and 240 are in the launcher and marked experimental. On the author's RTX 5080 the levels run at about 90 to 120 FPS.
  • Resolution and quality. The 3D scene renders at up to 4K, native output at 720p, 1440p, 1800p or 4K, temporal upscaling at 67, 58 or 50 percent, and five presets from Low (for integrated graphics like the Radeon 780M) to Ultra.
  • Controls and languages. DualSense, Xbox and other pads plus keyboard, all remappable. Every language of the PS4 version can be picked, Polish included, whatever region your copy is from.
  • Extras. The developers' own debug menu (level select, invincibility, all weapons) on R3, unlimited ammo, F12 screenshots at full resolution, and a launcher that checks GitHub for updates.

The launcher deserves a word too: it borrows Gallowmere's colours and reads the fonts from your own copy of the game, so it looks like part of MediEvil rather than a debug tool.

What you need and where to get it

MediEvil PC port requirements: game version 01.00, US or European PS4 copy, no game files included
MediEvil
  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, and a graphics card with Vulkan. The author tests on an RTX 5080; since 1.3.4 the port also behaves on 8 GB laptop cards, and since 1.3.5 on old Radeon RX 570 and 580.
  • Your own copy of MediEvil for PS4. The US release CUSA11227 or the European CUSA12982, as an unpacked folder or a package (.pkg) made from your own console. The launcher installs from the package itself and can resume if it stops.
  • Game version. 01.00 and the 01.02 update are both supported, but the built-in patches (the 4K framebuffer pool among them) were written for 01.00 first, so the base version is the safe choice.

The only real download is the Releases page of bc160201983/medievil_2019_pc_port on GitHub (it used to be called medievil_pc, and the old address redirects). Take medievil-windows.zip, unpack it into a normal folder, start MediEvil.exe, point it at your dump and press PLAY. Windows SmartScreen will complain because the build is not signed. Repacks with the game already inside are not this project, and I would not run them.

Common problems and fixes

MediEvil PC port problems: 8 GB card stutter fixed in 1.3.4, RX 580 crash fixed in 1.3.5, 25 open issues
MediEvil
  • Crash on the third level with an NVIDIA card. Fixed in 1.3.4: two of the port's threads recorded GPU commands out of order. Update first.
  • Crash on start with an RX 570, RX 580 or other Polaris card. Fixed in 1.3.5, which keeps the older texture path on drivers without a Vulkan extension the 1.3.4 change needed.
  • Stutter on laptops and 8 GB cards. 1.3.4 stopped the port from rebuilding the game's 3D lighting textures about 14 times a frame and from throwing out textures still in use.
  • Stutter above 60 FPS. Expected for now: at 120 and 240 the busiest levels are held back by the port's single GPU translation thread. On a 144 Hz screen, the "Half display refresh" limit gives smoother motion than a flat 60.
  • European copy closes right after the window opens. That was before 1.3.3; CUSA12982 now starts.
  • Gamepad can't reach some menu items at 1440p or 4K native output. The game's UI stays at 1080p. Use "4K (sharpest)" render resolution instead, or switch to 1080p in the in-game menu (Insert, or R3 + L2) and back.
  • Sound too quiet on headphones. Fixed in 1.3.4: the port now mixes the game's 7.1 down itself.

As of October 21 the tracker has 25 open issues. PS4 Pro mode is still experimental and stops in the texture cache, so leave it off.

The launcher offers updates by itself from 1.3.3 on; otherwise unpack the new zip over the old folder, and saves, settings and mods stay. MediEvil is one of more than twenty PS4 games ported this month, and our full list of PS4 ports on PC is updated every day.
