Next week Nintendo runs two full Directs back to back, something it has never done before. On 8 September comes an anniversary stream for forty years of The Legend of Zelda, on 9 September a general Direct, and straight after it a Treehouse: Live gameplay session.

When to watch

Both streams start at the same time, 7am Pacific. Here is that hour where you are.

The anniversary stream runs about half an hour, the general Direct about forty five minutes. Treehouse: Live follows the second one and, according to VGC, lasts roughly a hundred and ten minutes. Nearly three hours across two days.

What is in them

  • 8 September, Zelda. How Nintendo intends to mark forty years of the series. There is a precedent: for the fortieth of Super Mario Bros. the company shipped Galaxy and Galaxy 2 ports on Switch plus a line of merchandise.
  • 9 September, the general Direct. According to VGC the stream covers Nintendo Switch 2 games arriving this winter.
  • Straight after, Treehouse: Live. By Nintendo's own description this is people playing what the Direct showed, which makes it the only place with live gameplay rather than a cut.

On the rumour side. Images appeared online before the announcement showing an anniversary Switch 2 in Zelda livery and a matching Pro Controller. Nintendo has said nothing about hardware, so treat it as a rumour, though a special console for an anniversary is hardly an exotic idea.

For our purposes the interesting part of this pair is technical: whether we finally see how the Switch 2 holds up with the big winter releases. What actually runs on weak hardware we went through in a separate piece.
