On October 21, EA closed BioWare and stopped work on the next Mass Effect. In the ten days since, more has come out about the cancelled game than in six years of development: a two-minute internal trailer titled Mass Effect Universe leaked, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier confirmed it was real, YouTuber Dantics described the game's story and design, and composer Austin Wintory released the music he'd written for it. Here's everything known as of October 31, with what's confirmed kept apart from what's rumor.
What's officially confirmed

A staff letter signed by EA chief studios officer Cam Weber and COO David Tinson says "a small team at BioWare" was working on early development of Mass Effect, and that EA decided not to move forward, "which means we're closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace." BioWare confirmed it on X on October 21 at 17:06 UTC: the studio is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect is ending. The letter gives no job numbers; Bloomberg did: about 400 roles across EA, roughly 3 percent of staff, with about 50 of them at BioWare.
- What the letter leaves out. Nothing about the series' future: whether the rights get sold, licensed to another studio or shelved. Dragon Age isn't mentioned either.
- What else was decided. The same letter pauses The Sims' Project Lotus, keeps Marvel's Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game, pairs Respawn with DICE on a shared project and shrinks the skate. team.
- Background. The buyout of EA by a consortium of Saudi Arabia's PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners closed on August 4, 2026, and the company left the stock market. According to VGC, the $55 billion deal was financed with about $18 billion of debt.
The Mass Effect Universe trailer

On October 22 a roughly two-minute video with a Mass Effect Universe title card appeared on Reddit. Schreier wrote on Bluesky the same day: "Can confirm that this is a real trailer of the Mass Effect game that BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday." The video opens with a disclaimer: pre-production assets, captured in engine by a small team, no gameplay. According to Kotaku and other outlets, it shows a new hero, an ex-Alliance soldier in an N7 trench coat, meeting an asari in a bar, a flashback fight with a krogan, repaired Mass Relays, a small ship and a crew of a human, a krogan and a quarian against a Milky Way galaxy map. EA hasn't commented on the leak and there's no official upload, so we're not embedding it.
What Dantics says, and why it's still rumor

On October 23 Australian YouTuber Dantics released a video claiming he sat on BioWare's "Mass Effect Council", a group of creators the studio shared work with. That council does appear in the Legendary Edition credits, but no reporter has verified Dantics' own place on it. His Mass Effect Universe title matches the trailer's card; the rest is unconfirmed so far.
- Time and setting. More than 600 years after the Reaper War. The galaxy is in a cold war between three blocs: humans with krogan and batarians, the Council races, and the geth as a third superpower, with an unknown enemy pulling the strings.
- The hero. Not Shepard but a customisable N7 agent, in Dantics' words "a cross between John Wick and James Bond", with implants that let you see through walls and hack the environment.
- Missions. Handcrafted missions with Hitman-style freedom and brutal close-range executions, with less squad combat than the trilogy.
- Companions. Liara returns as a Matriarch, the crew includes a krogan, a quarian and a human, squadmates can clash with each other, and there are romances. Shepard's legacy is honoured whatever Mass Effect 3 ending you picked.
The main contradiction is scope. Dantics insists the game was "a lot further in development" than BioWare said, while EA and BioWare both call it early development, and the trailer itself is built from pre-production assets. Forbes' Paul Tassi, who relayed the claims, notes the project likely never got far along. Insider Shinobi602 and former BioWare cinematic supervisor Tony de Waal partly backed Dantics, but that isn't official information either.

About 70 months passed between the December 2020 reveal and the cancellation. We covered the studio's own history, from Baldur's Gate to the closure, in our look back at 30 years of BioWare.
The music nobody hired
The closest anyone will get to hearing the new Mass Effect is the video above. Austin Wintory, the Grammy-winning composer of Journey, posted My ideas for Mass Effect 5 on his YouTube channel: eight cues, about 22 minutes in total, for orchestra, synths and voice. He wrote and recorded them in 2025 on his own initiative, as a pitch while he was in talks with BioWare and EA. Nobody hired him, so this isn't the game's score, just one composer's idea of it. Wintory calls the series his "white whale".
What happens to the series
Officially, nothing yet: EA hasn't said a word about the Mass Effect rights. Fans launched a #SaveMassEffect petition on Change.org asking EA to either fund the game or license the series to another studio. It gathered nearly 100,000 signatures in its first 48 hours, according to Dark Horizons, and passed a quarter of a million by October 27, Kotaku reports. Fans have also moved offline: on October 26 Kala Elizabeth bought 15 seconds every hour on a Times Square screen at 1560 Broadway for $250, and a GoFundMe set up by organizer Mer hit its $5,274 goal in under 15 minutes. That money goes to billboards near EA's Redwood City headquarters, at the closing Edmonton office and at The Game Awards in Los Angeles on December 10. EA hasn't responded to any of it. Analyst Joost van Dreunen told IGN the series is too expensive for most buyers. The Amazon Mass Effect series, according to reports citing IGN, remains in development with Mike Gamble still an executive producer; more in our story on the show. The next date when anything might be said is N7 Day on November 7, though whether it happens this year is unknown.
