Rockstar showed GTA 6 on PS5 and the leaks went pale. Their author cashed out a quarter million the same evening

Half an hour of official footage did what weeks of argument could not: the GTA 6 leaks lost their shine on the spot. Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, and the picture is so far ahead of the leaked clips that the whole debate about how the game looks answered itself. That same evening, the person behind the leaks started pulling money out of his own token.

The video went up on 27 August on Netflix and stayed subscriber only for the first six hours, after which it went out free on Rockstar's own channels. The studio's wording on the official page leaves no room: captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. The date has not moved, 19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Why it is now clear the leaker had a very early build

The comparison speaks for itself. The official material comes off a console and looks the way a game should a few months out. The leaked clips that carried all the noise come from a PC, and a PC version of GTA 6 does not officially exist: the game page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and nothing else.

Which gives a simple picture. What reached the leaker was not the build being polished for release but an early internal PC version, the kind a studio works on and shows to nobody. That explains the flat lighting, the thin streets and everything else fans had already written down as disappointment. Judging the game by those clips made about as much sense as judging a film by rough editing dailies.

What the leaks were actually selling

The scheme was in plain sight from the start, plenty of people just did not look at it. Each of the fifteen clips carried a watermark with a QR code pointing at a crypto token called CYBERLEEK. The louder the leak was discussed, the more the token was traded, and the author collected creator fees on every buy and sell. There was no classic rug pull with the whole supply dumped: around 270 million tokens were burned instead.

Chart: the GTA 6 leaker token market cap falling from 25 million dollars to 2.7 million

  • The cash-out ran across four transactions on 27 August. Estimates differ: outlets counted around 250 thousand dollars, CoinDesk around 270 thousand. The gap comes from what you count, creator fees alone or the sale of his own tokens as well.
  • Roughly 146 thousand dollars arrived in wrapped SOL, plus 15.4 million tokens in fees, which were then sold for about 125 thousand in a single transaction.
  • Market cap is down almost tenfold from the peak. On 23 August it reached 25 million dollars, by the day of the reveal about seven were left, and in the evening we checked DexScreener ourselves: 2.7 million at a price of 0.0036 dollars, down 23 percent in a day.

The timeline says more than any comment could. The money left on the exact day Rockstar showed the real game and leaks stopped being currency.

What this leaves us with

I find the whole thing a useful inoculation. For six weeks people argued about graphics using somebody's crooked recordings, wrote about downgrades, declared that Rockstar had lost it. It took half an hour of official footage to show that the argument was never about the game, it was about someone's marketing with a QR code in the corner.

So, 19 November, and separately the PC version Rockstar still says nothing about. Although, judging by where those clips came from, work on it is under way.
